After having spent 4+ years in the Canadian Army as a communication specialist, I took a look at DynCorp positions for similar positions but most require US citizenship. Anyone know if there an actual makrket for this kind of background or a CP course is in order to change to something where you have an actual chance to get a job? I'm also in the process of taking a Security Management certificate from a Canadian Uni but that will take at least another year to complete. Don't want to put family thru another posting to a hole in the middle of nowhere.

Your employability depends what comms systems you have experience with.
But rather than stick to looking at Dyncorp or other American firms I would advise looking at all of the big players, Armorgroup, Aegis etc. Also look at Job Vacancies in United Nations and International Organizations for Ngo and UN- I know for a fact that the UN were/ are looking for comms techs. I would also look for other companies that require communications, KBR for instance. Being in Canada have you tried domestic jobs, quite often comms guys get well paid in govt jobs. Too often people think security and immediately want to go for the whole frontline guns and risk roles, but take for instance Iraq- all the companies engaged on work there have ops rooms and HQs, with the same needs as the military did. I would suggest approach the companies engaged in Iraq- there is a list of security firms on this website, but I can't remember the exact post name, search for names list now free or something like it- and explain you are interested in a support job. |

Thanks for the reply. I was searching exactly for that type of job but most of HQ positions require US citizenship. My experience is on the operator side so basically setting up comms, making a command post run, making sure people are trained on how to use all the comms equipment plus I have a multitude of computer courses.
I got my CV professionally rewritten and sent off quiet a few out in the last couple of days. I'll try UN but I don't know if they take Canadians. |

The UN will take any nationality- though the application process can take a long time. As I suggested though look outside the security only market as well, NGOs and also industrial companies- oil firms etc- also look for comms guys. Worth sending CVs to them as well.
