Honi soit qui mal y pense

Hello all.

My father died last week so things have been a bit tough this last week.

Whilst having a look about his house I've found the following item, does anyone recognise what it is?

I've done a search for the saying Honi soit qui mal y pense which translates to Evil be to him who evil thinks

Its quite big, about the size of an A4 sheet of paper and is quite heavy.

My missus reckons my dad's nicked it from a court door or somthing similar, any ideas??

I thought about adding it to my front door but I don't think it will match my PVC door - especially as it has my name on Maly (well almost)

Any idea's where its from?

alright mate am an ex grenadier and it the moto of the garter you will find all guards regiments have it especially the grens sorry for the loss mate but he's left u a pot of gold there keep hold of it

Honi soit qui mal i pense is in French ( old French) it started in the war of 100 years against the French with the king Edouard III , It's the most noble order of the Garter .
It's the motto of the King knights.

It is the moto of the chivalric order of the garter, also seen in connection with Green Knight too and mentioned in a great many books.

As you say translates to 'evil be to him who evil thinks' or another suggested translation is ' shame be to him who thinks evil of it'
