Hi,
I'm 16 and I'm interested in getting into the Close Protection field after going to university. Has anyone got any advice, like where to go to get training or where to go before getting into to CP work. I've heard that it's better to go into the armed forces or to go into the police force before starting CP work. Is this correct? Regards, Pompalomp |

Get at least ten years more life under your belt. Short & simple. Aside that some time spent in the forces or police won't do you wrong.

Hi,
I agree with scab, you need some real life experience before you getting into CP industry. There is no harm to research about your career inspiration (I did. It so many times) and stdy via internet or forums (CPW) to build your knowledge.... Coming from UK police background, yes joining the force won't be any disadvantage and you will learn more about criminalogy and how to deal with them but also give you confidence to react in different situations. Just concentrate on your studies and research about the foces (police) and cp industry. Hope it helps DH..... |

Thanks to everyone who has replied so far,
24/7 i looked at the thread you mentioned and read all of the replies to it. Would everyone agree that the best thing for me to do is to go to University get a degree, join the TA at the same time and save up for the training courses? In regards to needing to be smart to get well paid jobs, how smart are we talking; are we talking about 12 B's in GCSE or 12 A*'s? I'm predicted 6 A*'s 4 A's and 2 B's would this be good enough? Regards, Pompalomp |

Well you can be that smart...
But I agree with you on this and I am glad that you understood the reasoning behind it aswell. Join the TA or when turn 18 join Special Constabulary (your local police force) Take care and keep on reading DH |

DarkHorse,
Thanks, I'm pretty sure that's what I'm going to do but you never know, as a lot of you have said, by the time finished uni i might have a different career choice in mind. However if i still want to be in CP work when i get to the point of deciding what i'm going to do in life, i will probably wait untill (as many of you have put it,) "i have a few more years under the belt". Thanks again to everyone, Regards, Pompalomp |

Hi mate,
I agree with the other replies and especially those regarding life experience. However, you could have ten years experience in a particular job and it might not bring you any closer to achieving your goal. Remember that CP work is primarily divided into three areas; Executive/Diplomatic, Celebrity and the Military sector. Experience which is relevant to one of these areas may not be so relevant for another so choose your ideal career progression path. Some celebrity bodyguards for example, are just big guys, like 6'6" and 18 stone but they may not have the relevant Military or Police background that might be required for Diplomatic or Executive Protection. In terms of myself however, it was my qualifications, my desire to learn and my tenacity which allowed me to become a close protection officer in the Executive sector which is my current role, but I am certainly not 6'6" and 18 stone, I'm just a normal bloke. All I can say with any certainty is that you should try to obtain the most relevant qualifications that you can and let your CV do the talking. I hope to see you around the CP Circuit in the future! |

Tommy0909,
Thanks for your advice, i didn't realise that it's better to have relevant experience in the field you are interested in than to have less experience in the complete overview of CP. Thanks for the info. Regards, Pompalomp |
