What's the difference between Tactical Surveillance & Surveillance..?

Also, are Tactical Handgun Course and Tactical Firearms Course kind of the same..?! If you have a choice/budget to do just one, which one would you go for..?

Thanks.

Hi Belfort,

Surveillance or Tactical surveillance, I think they are the same but the wording (sorry don't quote me if wrong) I have conducted surveillance on local goverment level and term we use is Direct Surveillance, intrusive surveillance or Human intelligence source. Probably tactical surveillance is some thing for CPO's. I am sure Peter (ISS) will shade some light and direct us here..

Tactical Firearms or hand gun course, again from my experience, I would go for Tactical firearms course as it should cover the variety of firearms and their functions..

Hope it helps!!

DH....

Belfort,

I suppose it depends on where you heard the term or in what context.

In our terms it is the name we give for a particular training course where Surveillance is likely to be conduced in a semi to hostile area or in a foreign country. This isn’t an advertising blurb but I will tell you of a few differences.

The ‘tactical’ training differs in content and style somewhat to our regular courses where students are taught conventional surveillance which is likely to be carried out for commercial/private investigations, or insurance fraud here in the UK or a permissive environment.

A few examples of the differences in the training. In the UK if you carry out a target recce prior to a surveillance you may be able to have a few drive pasts and walk pasts of the premises in order to get the info you require. You may be able to park up for a while taking notes, drawing sketches and maybe even taking pictures.

In a tactical theatre, you will be lucky to get one drive past and one walk past and not hang around the area. Therefore your skills, memory and natural aptitude have to be of the highest standard. In addition, rather than going out alone, you will also go out with a back up in the event of a drama.

Also, rather than using conventional terminology on the radio, more brevity codes are used, especially ‘spot codes’ to indicate where you are or the target is.

Our training areas are spot coded and on the advanced courses they are used from day one. Conventionally, the ‘Eyeball’ may report, ‘That’s taken the first, the first on the A629 towards Halifax, or ‘gone left left on Accrington Street towards the football ground’, To give it some brevity in order to keep it covert from radio hams and eavesdroppers you would hear, ‘that’s at Yellow One Zero towards Yellow One One’. The codes are not just used for brevity but if you are in an area with no street signs or in a foreign city where you cannot read let alone pronounce the name of a street they become very effective. It really sharpens up your skills inaddition to your urban/rural navigation.

Some of the conventional tactics are also changed to operating against a more aware target which I wont go into. The tactical course that we open to the public is 7 days long. Our longest course is 6 weeks but not open to the public.

We have also included a firearms portion where, a few days and evenings are spent on the ranges carrying out vehicle drills, anti ambush drills and so forth.

This wasn’t meant to sound like an advertisement and I hope that answers your question but the cynic in me tells me that you already knew all this...

Cheers

Peter

Belfort, the terminology can be quite confusing, especially if one knows little about the subject matter, normally a skills provider will list under the course title a full description, overview, topics, modules, skills sets, criteria and other stuff such as prices etc of the particular program in question.

Having read this information, one can then compare to other training programs, other training skills providers, prices based on budget and needs or desires as an individual in your vocation.

'Tactical' is defined as pertaining to a maneuver or plan of action designed as an expedient toward gaining a desired end or temporary advantage.

All the best

J
