Good day everyone,(or night as the case may be)

I stumbled upon this site via a Wikipedia link, and have been around for a bit, reading here and there, mostly the security guard, Door Supervision and bodyguard forums. Now, this seems to be one of the few great sites I can find about this line of work, trouble is, It's mostly British.

Great info, advice and so on, however it becomes rather harder when it comes to specific info, specially training.

Now, a bit about myself i suppose.
Simply, I'm looking to get into door supervision/body guarding. I know I need a lot more experience for body guarding, but that's my long term goal. Currently, I'm working on applying for my security license.

Thing is, that doesn't get me an opening into door supervision/bouncer.
Another problem, I'm turning 19(In a week), but I've been told I look younger, which makes me feel that I could possibly be looked down upon by potential employees and therefore the people I would be communicating with in the even of a Job.

Could anyone point me in the right direction for reaserch/info/training, etc?

I live in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada

Cheers

Hey Mate, 19 years is very young but keep you head up, try to get some more experiance in the security field before you start to concentrate on CP courses or cp work. This field is very sensitive and need to have experianced people. If you gain more experiance in the security field you will able to get your foot into the cp field. Maybe get in contact with Zoran from maluco tactical (Maluco Tactical Training) and ask him for advise, tell him Dirk told you to contact him :-) I hope you get your chance to work in this field ;-)

Bye
Dirk

dirk, thank you for the reply and recomendation, have it open in another tab(mozilla firefox) and am checking it out now.

I know that 19 is too early to get into CP work itself, as I said, i'm looking to get my foot in the door, and that's the place I aim to get to(CP). I will try to locate a contact with zoran and will tell him ya sent me.

in the meantime, thanks

to the rest, I'm still listening

Sorry mate , You will most likely find that on the CP side of things you are pissing in the wind! If you are young looking 19 yr old it may be difficult to obtain door work also. I dont know your stature etc so I am assuming you arent the biggest chap in the world!!!
Try some festival work over the summer months in Canada and work from there ... Jax Desmond (sorry dont have his website) has regularly got some short term beer garden type gigs that might assist you, but again with no prior it might be a tall order.
Keep the chin up as Dirk says and beware if a company offers you a CP course at your age and suggests that work is a reality from doing it cos quite frankly it isnt!

173CM, 100 something KG(it goes up and down a lot, but I break the 100 threashold)

So summer garden gigs? ^_^ that's a place for me to start looking.

So then, I take it at this age the General security/and or Law enforcment would be the way for me to go?

I despise being judged on age >.>
makes it hard for getting a place to rent, the looks u get at the mall, ugh!

Sorry geezer but they are the options open !!! Military and LEO background gives you a good leg up! After all most guys and Gals here had to start some place too.
I know it sucks being judged on age but the truth exists that you need to have some life experience and something to back up the bravado ... As you can see from apartment letting etc no one trusts the exuberence of youth .... so imagine that when potential life threatening situations occur.
The beer garden tasks are good and Jax has a lot of work throughout the states. So it is a good start if you are successful.
Good Luck and dont get too down hearted.

Hello,

I'm Jax Desmond. Unfortunately with no experience in the field Marcus is right, it is a tall order. I won't be able to provide you any work until you have at least some experience under your belt.

My advice to you if you're looking to get into this field is to join the Canadian Armed Forces ideally as a Military Police officer. The MP's tend to work in conjunction with JTF2 providing Close Protection which will give you the necessary skills you need to enter our field.

If the military isn't quite what you're looking for it might benefit you to start working general contract security. While it isn't exactly a glamorous job, if you work hard you can succeed and move into management positions which will enable you to succeed further in the security industry.

Once you've done security for awhile then begin applying at local nightclubs and bars to gain the Door Supervision work you want.

This industry is really about proving yourself and developing your skill sets. I know I messaged you suggesting the IPSSC course but unfortunately I didn't realize your age and inexperience.

If you want further information feel free to email me. You can reach me directly at jdesmond@ops-int.com or jdesmond@mail.com

I'm always happy to try and help another Canadian succeed in our industry.

Best of luck,

Jax Desmond

i'd like to thank everyone that posted so far, it gives me an idea of where to start.

on the subject of the beer garden things in the summer, could someone provide me with a bit of info as to what that is and what the work enties? Would there be a canadian equivelent?(Not in the position where I can get up and go to the states at any time)

Would there be any courses I could take, even if it's out of my own pocket?(As I know i'm not going to be able to get a sponsor unless it was to be an employer)

I've been thinking about the Canadian forces, not sure if that's the path I want to go JUST yet.

In regards to Law enforcment, getting ready to do the testing sometime this summer ^^

Also, what do you mean(Jax) by general contract security, like, would that be mobile, partol, condominium...or any and all of these?(currently applying for a lisence as we speak, but the joke down here is, it comes with NO training/test) You simply ask and recieve. >.>

Thanks everyone so far

Well I am the service provider Marcus was speaking about who is hiring for the beer garden security this summer which is in Canada. Unfortunately though as previously stated I do require people with some experience in security.

As for courses, I'd recommend at this point starting with a basic security course offered by some private Law Enforcement academies. There is a good course run through the Northwest Academy in Manitoba where I have worked as a guest instructor. You might want to call their registrar Stan Payne for more information.

And yes, contract security is working in a uniformed capacity for a company such as Securitas, Garda, G4S or Paladin providing access control at places such as condominiums, warehouses and office buildings, In the advanced stages of this security it can involve mobile patrols, alarm responses and quality assurance.

The benefit to this as well is in most Provinces, once you apply and obtain employment with one of these companies they will apply for a security license on your behalf.

Once you've successfully worked for one of these companies for a few years give me a call and I'll see what I can find for you in the way of special event security.

Best of luck,

Jax Desmond

hey guys/gals,

an unexpected development, and again I'm seeking your help if you'd be so kind.

I randomly went on craigslist, to find this:

Nightclub/Special Event Security--Immediate Openings

They claim that experience is not necessary, and will be provided to those selected. It is also a part time thing(wait, aren't all Door Supervision places where the place is only open a few hours a night?)

Anyways, I got into contact with the lady, and am to set up an interview for next week. Makes since, since I'm turning 19 the end of this week, so yeah

Now a few questions:

1. Since they aren't very specific in where I would be working(environment), what do you guys think?
2. Again since place unspecified, how should I DRESS for the interview?
3. What kind of questions should I be prepared for?(I'm sure it varies from retail at least partly)
4. in terms of CV/Resume, I know it should be tailored to the job, but is it alright to keep my (pretty much only non volunteer exp) on there to show I have exp dealing with customers/people?

5. Any specific advice, especially regarding due to my age/how to present myself best? (For example I wear glasses, and that...lowers my self-esteem when it comes to this kind of work? --not because of anything, except being looked down on, therefore not given the CHANCE to present myself)

(I've seen interview tips around here somewhere, so I'll be looking for those)

6. Anything else I might find useful? Should I be bringing a cover letter TO the interview?

*bow* thanks in advance!
