er, I have had to persuade my other half, my family, the British Legion (who are funding my CP course) and all the people that I know, that the job which I am to start training for is a professional conducting his/her duties in an impeccable manner, trained to a high level and not a mindless thug.
I can see someone called "fatbob" isnt going to be the sharpest tool in the box, even so, as a new-comer to the industry, I know this is a bad idea. How will clients ever take security specialists seriously as highly trained professionals if this is the manner in which some of us conduct ourselves. Spoils it for those out there who take pride in their work. |

I think the biggest problem here is the wording. If a group of doormen who also happen to be boxers wish to compete in the ring that is there business. As “fatbob” says a more than few doormen do box or study the martial arts. However, the words in the advert used inflame the situation merely to sell more tickets is rather concerning. To us it’s a joke, but if a reporter on a “slow news day” gets a hold of this story ?

Received from the sia after this "contest" was brought to their attention....
Dear Mr ************, Thank you for your email about the doorman 'contest' being held in Manchester. Since we introduced national regulation and licensing for the door supervisor sector in 2004 we have worked hard to raise standards of professionalism in the industry and to ensure that the old-style 'bouncer' image was consigned to history. In the past few years the door supervisor sector has come a long way and more and more door supervisors are being seen as professionals, essential security providers and ambassadors for their venues. I agree with you that the Manchester event is not a good reflection of the modern, licensed door supervisor. Regards, Assistant Director Marketing Security Industry Authority 90 High Holborn London WC1V 6CJ For further information about the Security Industry Authority visit our website www.the-sia.org.uk Not happy about it they sure as hell don't support it....... I may have chosen a better title and/or terminology, but apart from that I can't see a problem.
Every one knows (playing devils advocate here) that doormen are just pumped up steroid freaks on a power trip, that only make minimum wage due to the fact that they can't get a proper job. If a boxing comp, or for that matter, any other martial tournament, that is only open to DS is bad for the image of the industry, where does that leave the CPO sector..........Big monkeys in cheap suits on a power trip that like to play with firearms and throw reporters around. . To be perfectly honest, we must realise that their will always be sceptics who criticise all aspects of the security industry. Having been a CPO and DS for several years, I could not care less what joe public's opinion of me is, as it is only the opinion of the client that really matters. Personally , i think I'm quite a nice guy. If a certain section of the population (pissed up, drugged up, fucked up or any other piece of lowlife shit with rights) has a low opinion of me, then thats their problem and not mine. Sorry to rant but who really cares, in the world of the bouncer your damned if you do and damned if you don't |

I have been at ring side for countless boxing matches and it is far from a controlled environment. The presence of a referee makes little difference as I have witnessed them allow one fighter knock another into unconsciousness long after a fight should have been stopped. I have dealt with injuries from minor cuts to those which have resulted in sever disabilities and even death. It is as barbaric and moronic as the idea of this contest. This will in no way be a good night out. |

One of my colleagues is a journalist and asked me about this 2 weeks ago. I repeated pretty much what we have said here, without names & details. Fortunately as he works with us, both as a company and as an industry, if he does do something with this it will be for the good not as an attack on the workers. I'll let you know "if" anything comes of it. |

It seems that the sia are sitting on the fence with this.
I doubt if they will do anything about this as, as far as I can tell, does not affect the licensing conditions. If the event were illegal or if the SIA would loose money by inaction / make it from action it would be different. I would have thought that with recent press interest in the industry and specifically in the SIA they would start doing something to improve.. |
