This is odd question that you all may be able to shed light on?
One thing I have noticed is that since I have been promoting or owning gay clubs and pubs for 20 years now, I have discovered that there is very little trouble in the gay club scene compared to the strait clubs? Also one thing lacking is shortage of gay and lesbian door supervisors! There must be some out there? I know one gay security company owner in the whole of the UK who does a great job in London but he struggles to find the right people at times. I have a feeling that Door Supervision is a bit like rugby or football, it's a very masculine profession and people don't want to "outed" but I have found that the doorstaff I have worked with are all ok about it. One big problem we have in clubs is that many door supervisors are unable to cope with dealing gay men (usually when it comes to searches) and feel unconfortable with the idea of this. Also in one club I know in South London you have to be aware that many gay men are gym trained and toned (unlike me at 45 years old!) and can be quite a handful when pissed up and could no doubt knock many of us into next week. Plus dont think that all gay men are camp queens, I am gay myself, but been an ex-boxer and worked in the Military for a few years I am hardly the gay stereotype! This brings me on to the training course I attended the other week in Marylebone.....shocking was the word that brings to mind. The course was ok, but the person running was a total homophobe ex-army bloke and continually took the piss of gay people and made some of the ladies on the course cringe with his misonginist jibes and even made some strait Aussies embarassed! Don't forget that gay clubs are getting bigger so with this in mind this means more money in our pockets for doing the doors so bare this in mind? Cheers ARX |

Spot on mate.
As in every profession, there are gays and lesbians and indeed think of a situation where a doorman at a straight club is known as gay. It would make things all that more difficult for him regardless of how good at his job he is. Straights at gay bars/clubs may be an advantage as they would not be interested in flirting with the patrons etc. as we all have seen goes on with the bouncers as clubs. Regardless, i think straight, gay or not sure, if you're working in any capacity professionalism and responsibility must be put first. Interesting thread and thoughts, thanks for posting. m |

The trainer who you encountered has broken the 7303 protocol, its a shame you had to put up with his unprofessional ism! He does not deserve to hold the qualification if he cant leave his personal opinions at the door.
I personally have no qualms about working in gay bars, or clubs. At the end of the day its a venue just like anywhere else. It really should not matter the sexuality of the customers, or client, at the end of the day your a professional door supervisor is there to do a job, and get paid and go home again. As I mentioned earlier, leave any personal opinions at the door, and not bring them to work. If you are capable of doing a the job surely it really shouldn't matter. Regards Lildev666 |

victor dear fellow..!!!! one thing i cannot understand about gay men and women is why so many of them feel the necessity to proclaim their sexuality to the world. i don't meet people and say 'hi, i'm andy and i'm straight'...
a lot of the time it is down to ignorance. you cannot really blame a lot of the homophobics. after all, most of the army have never been exposed to different cultures nor races nor sexualities. i myself had to adjust when i left and was scorned upon by my mates when i brought home my coloured girlfriend. ignorance i tell you...! i don't care what the sexuality nor race of anybody is, and i'll work with everybody anywhere - so long as they are professional enough to get on with the job. this is just my opinion but to quote MTS, it is an interesting post. cheers, andy. p.s. i believe once we remove the 'seriousness' out of such topics and start laughing at ourselves, the 'problems' would be quickly destroyed. humour - one of lifes saviours! I think the biggest problem is that straight men in particular often seem to have the misguided notion that any gay man must be after them, which is really rather sad, funny, but sad! That is basically the equivalent to saying every female they encounter must fancy them, which they don't!!
Where i can see how some people would maybe feel slighlty uncomfortable in such a position, we each have a choice, and if it makes us uncomfortable then we simply shouldn't take on work in that area. Everyone has their own personal comfort zones after all. Personally it really doesn't bother me in the slightest what sexuality anyone is, it's their own business, and to me a job is a job no matter which type of event or club it would be in. I have worked in lapdancing clubs before, and despite the fact it isn't somewhere i would personally chose to spend my free time, it is just a job. Granted the excess of very well endowed women nearly naked can make one feel rather inadequate, but each to their own. Maybe also patrons of gay clubs may not feel overly comfortable having straight door supervisors either, i can see how it can cut both ways there. The way i see it either way and at any type of club, male staff are feeling up blokes in the name of searches, and females are searching other females, and usually the women have a damned sight less on than the men and there is nothing worse than searching a female in barely any clothing. Never really see people as gay or straight, to me they are all just people, gay, straight, blue or green, all the same make up underneath the skin. |

People are pretty much alike. It's only that our differences are more susceptible to definition than our similarities.
