Littlewoman, you have done the DS course and so you have an excellent grounding to comment upon the course content and wether it could be done distance learning, and as you so rightly say DS work is for the main a part time thing, and 4 days is realistically a long time when you have other commitments and other jobs, and i haven't done DS course only CP, and yes i do know that it is different. The only thing i would say again is that it takes commitment to do distance learning and whereas i have no doubt you have that in bundles, some people are just too easily distracted by latest episode of coronation street or whatever nd would find distance learning a little like sitting and popping a yard of bubble wrap.... interesting to start with but a tad dull after 10 minutes or so. And thats CP too, i just don't think there is ANY substitute for being there and learning

Agreed Annie, too much information before a course can for some make that person over confident of their abilities. That is why the course itself should issue pre reading material for the candidate to augment that learning. In that way there is continuity of teaching rather than the risk of that student becoming a "know all" because that person has had differing or even conflicting advice.

I think most of us though have read a book or two prior to a course and for most of us it did no harm. In fact in some instances it made a student question a method and bring debate as to why a procedure is done a certain way. This actually is a good thing because it opens up the need to clarify methodology.

As far as the course know it all, you always get them even if they have not read into their subject. With over 20 courses I have done and the ones I have taught myself I have always met this character. It is the skill as a trainer to guide that person in a non confrontational way and show clear reasoning to its procedure. That way the "know it all" soon realises that they don't! If that situation becomes a problem on a course it really shows the lack of skills of that trainer in being able to deal with that type of person.

Anyway "know it all" is not as bad as "Course Trainer Mate" or "Flouro Man"! If you are wondering what that is all about then look over at www.arrse.co.uk at one of their threads in the behind the wire section. It had me in stitches. I might go and find it later and repost here for you

just a quick point !

yes the cours takes yopu through your roles and responsabilities what the course lacks is hands on training for example . you knock a guy back for say dress code he pulls a knife sittin in a class room aint gonna prepare you for that my first door course was back when we had council badges and the taining focused on restraint and how to deal with real situations not doin a written test where you didnt pass you failed this was you got it wrong you got a quick jab to the jaw. theres to many guys doin the training right now that arnt prepared for wht the job realy entails.
