Hi guys, can anyone reccomend me a course in the South-East? I'm based in Sussex, but can travel up to London, or around abouts.

Completely new to all this by the way, I'm a student currently on my gap year, looking for work for the rest of the year/during my time at uni (and maybe more, who knows!). I'm 18, and I've been TA Infantry for nearly a year and a half.

Cheers guys!

Speak to Bob at DSTO bud.

I think they deliver courses down your way.

Local college courses can be pretty poor. Most are given by someone from the Hotel and Catering department that also teaches the course licensees do and how to do silver service and such like. They have absolutely no experience on the door at all. So the course you get is the standard sia - how to be a door supervisor in a quiet wine bar sort of course. If you go to a security training company like DSTO then you will get 'Heres how the SIA say we should do things - heres how we do it in the real world.' You will also get better contacts as the training company will know where there's work and what companies are good to work for.

Hi LW,
I have to disagree with you about the door supervisors course's being run at the local college. I did mine at Weymouth College a few years back, the instructor was ex services, he had a good number of years experience behind him as a Door Supervisor also. We even had restraint thrown in aswell.

Its like everything do your homework, and find out who is running the course and get in touch and ask questions. At the end of the day its your career, so you obviously want a good instructor who can deliver the course well, and has the experience and knowledge to pass on to students.

Kind regards
Lildev666

Its good to know that some local colleges have good courses and I never said they were all bad. I just feel that people look-up to colleges as being reliable providers of quality training, as that is what they are there for. Therefore might not check in to them. Its like you said, you need to do your homework and preferably get an instructor who is currently working on the doors.

The basic course (as specified by the SIA) is that poor that it makes a huge difference which course you do as the instructor will hopefully add extra bits.

I have to disagree as well. I did my course at Leeds college. Excellent instructors with years of experience on the doors. Obviously other college courses may be poor but then again you could go to any training provider and get a poor course unless you do your homework first.

Thanks for all your help so far guys! I've sent Marcus2RRF a message. What is the industry like for taking on guys of my age and level of experience? (That is, very young, and very little!)
