Hi Guys
There are two new courses through Skills For Security with the ACPO approved design mark. 8 hour plasticuff course which includes an insurance policy to cover you for injury etc is £160 The new DNA Spray course starts next month live. This spray is REAL DNA not smartwater type molecules. It looks like a CS Gas spray but will dye the suspect red. Ultra Violet lamps will detect for months. The difference is how it is sold and how it is logged for continuity of evidence. I envisage this course to be around £140. If any of you want it ,remember they are legal and will be a proper qualification let me know. The DNA spray course is around 3 hours and I can do twenty at a time. I am based in the Midlands but have wheels will travel. If you are a long way away get a group of you and I will drive to you. All we need is a hall or conference room etc.
The plasticuffs we use can be opened with a standard police handcuff key so they can be used up to 200 times each which is pretty good going. houdini might be able to get out of them but done correctly and the prisoner kept under close control this shouldn't happen........ |

Hello Alan,
Thanks for letting us know about your courses. I have a couple of questions if I may. Would I be correct in thinking that plasitcuffs are much quicker to apply in a high stress situation, is this their particular advantage over loose link or quick cuffs? What is the legal standpoint when using any sort of cuffs, as a private individual can I only use them on private property, where as previously having work under the umbrella of the Home Office I could use them in public? Taking this one step further, if during the course of my job I was witness to a criminal act and a wished to make a citizens arrest would I be able to use restraints in public, if it boils down to appropriate and proportional, the criminal act would be one of (extreme) violence, I'm sure that many of use have had to fall back on the " I was in fear of my life" line. With regards to the DNA spray, what advantage has it got over Smartwater apart from being visible, is the detection methods different to smartwater, the reason I ask this is that when you enter a police custody suit you will walk past a smartwater detector, so will this detect the DNA spray and will the custody staff be aware that it is DNA spray and not smartwater, as we know villains can get off on the most minor of technicalities. Hope these questions haven't been too long winded. Many thanks ACT |

IS this APR etc as trained by Andy Walker?
I am also an nstructor for these courses and fully endorse them- Andy Walker is the market leader in this sort of product and only his courses are Skills' and ACPO accredited and he builds in wrongfull arrest etc insurance. I would like to make myself available to anybody in the London/South east who requires this course. |

Hi all,
I would just like to mention on this topic as long you know the proper application of handcuffs and have insurance cover, then you are perfectly within the law to use them. i have my own insurance with another coy in which i now use the cuffs, i also bought my cuffs specialy from the net from america and they are totaly legal and plastic but a bit different from the apr issued. Please also remember i have respect for the apr and offender id that mr walker delivers, as i am also a trainer, but i do have my own vue and doubts with these courses. anyone interested having details of the insurance coy or the cuff site please pm me. |

There's no specific law about handcuffs, (except that if you're commiting a crime such as burglary they are considered a weapon of offense). It just comes under normal rules of reasonable force and all that is well covered in the course.
The DNA spray also has UV dye so it will show up in the same way as a smartwater spray. The cans are designed to be used only once so that they identify someone as being present at a particular incident. I don't know if this differs from smartwater. Also in addition to making the suspect easy to spot (until they've had a shower) if you spray in in their eyes they won't be able to see much (similar to getting blood in your eyes) so it can be used as a defensive spray. I beleive it has a range of about 12feet. |
