Hi Everyone.
Umm not sure how to word this, But here goes. Im about to start on the doors and a few people have said that the sia have restricted what sizes torches a door supervisor can now use. As there are so many makes types models etc. Can anyone offer advice as too what the current reg states and what type of Torch would be best. And what torches you people currently use.( Size, Bulb or LED ) Many Thanks People Callum |

I'm not sure about sia restrictions, but it would stand to reason that someone would object to an oversized torch. If so, 5.11 has just developed a new rechargeable light that has a 90 minute run time and puts out 90-250 lumins from their led. Supposedly the new system recharges fully within 90 seconds! That kind of output probably hurts as much as a full sized metal torch to the head. Worth looking into. http://content.511tactical.com/Light...feBrochure.pdf

The sia does regulate the size of torches. It sounds like there have been Chinese whispers going about.
The Surefire torch in that link looks fine but there was another marketed for self-defence that had an specially designed front end that Surefire described as a 'Strike Face'. At the point where something is designed to be able to be used as a weapon, it becomes a weapon. Therefore you would be carrying an illegal weapon even if you didn't use it as such. There have been suggestions that the big mag-light torches are only carried so that they could be used as a weapon. Some police have been telling Door Staff that these are illegal but they are not. However if you used one to defend yourself, even if you used reasonable force then you might have to justify in court why you felt it necessary to use such a big torch. If when you are selecting your torch, you have the thought 'that looks useful to hit people with' then you're going to have problems. Some companies might have their own rules about what you can use. Its also worth getting a UV torch to check for fake ID's. |

Just so there is no confusion, I wasn't suggesting that the light be used as an impact weapon. I would suggest that 240 lumens in the eyes will disoriented nearly anyone for a few seconds. I have that Surefire light and it has been flagged at one airport as a weapon, but not at another. When in doubt merely pack it in the luggage, but for a doorman or security officer, I would go with a light that is primarily used to illuminate, not club.

As far as I recollect the torch mentioned above "Strike Face " has a dual purpose and a recent court case involving I think it was a car speed radar detector it had a dual purpose as it open garage doors was deemed to be legal. Its a very grey area if something can be deemed dual purpose as laws tend to be worded very specifically.

Many Thanks LittleWoman.
I think its just been a case that the Police have perhaps said something and then its been taken that the sia have said something to the Police etc etc. In which case il be having something about 6" long that packs Lots of LED's. ( I think that should keep me covered ). And with regards the UV light... I've already got one.. its a little keyfob one that you can clip on keys etc.. ( That OK? ) I wasn't sure if I was jumping the gun in getting one, but i thought it wouldn't do any harm to get one incase. Thanks People . Very Much Appreciate the help for the Newbie door supervisor.Callum |

I swear by surefire.
I have one of these Sedo Domain Parking - Sedo GmbH It does have a 'defender' edge but its tough and fits discretely in your pocket. |

That sounds like the one I've got. There are some kiddies ones that work with 'magic ink' that are the wrong frequency. But if in doubt just test it on your driving license or a bank note. Also note that cocaine fluoresces under UV, although that doesn't prove that its cocaine.

Take a look an Inova T series,
Have been using a T1 model for 18 months, virtually indestructable, small and powerful...... and on the plus side, considerably cheaper than a sure fire. shop4torches Stay safe mate. |
