The Ministry of Defence has confirmed the death of Warrant Officer Class 2 Gary 'Gaz' O'Donnell GM, from 11 Explosive Ordnance Disposal Regiment Royal Logistic Corps, on Wednesday 10 September, in Helmand province, southern Afghanistan.
WO2 O'Donnell (40) dIed from injuries sustained from an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Musa Qaleh, Helmand province. At the time, he was commanding an Improvised Explosive Device Disposal (IEDD) team within the Joint Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Group who were dealing with a confirmed IED that had been detected by a high risk search team. Their task was to clear a route in a vulnerable area for 5 SCOTS Battlegroup, in and around the Western side of Musa Qaleh. Sadly, WO2 O'Donnell, who had completed almost 17 years of military service, died as a result of the explosion. |

I worked for ArmorGroup last year in Helmand and met Gaz on a few occasions,in fact his compound was behind ours.
Gaz was more then happy to run classes for our guys during his own time, something he obvouisly did not have to do.As you would imagine he was a very busy fella. He showed us the enemy TTPs and gave us all a good heads up.He was allways friendly and happy to help. I was very sad to see he was killed in action, reading the newspaper tributes he was at the top of his game, decorated for his service in Iraq,he was also very modest,no dits just facts about what was out there. Paul. |
