Saint Lucia travel warnings

This advice has been reviewed and reissued with an amendment to the Natural Disasters section (removal of the reference to Hurricane Dean). The overall level of the advice has not changed.

The hurricane season in St Lucia normally runs from June to November. You should monitor local and international weather updates. See the Natural Disasters section of this advice and Hurricanes for more details.

There is a low threat from terrorism. But you should be aware of the global risk of indiscriminate terrorist attacks which could be in public areas, including those frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers.

Around 73,000 British nationals visited St Lucia in 2006. Most visits are trouble-free. The main type of incident for which British nationals required consular assistance in Saint Lucia in 2006 were for the loss or theft of money and other documents, including passports. British nationals have also been arrested for drug-related offences, including trafficking.

Violent crime is a problem within local communities, and can sometimes affect tourists. Crimes include muggings, and thefts from hotels, yachts or holiday homes. See the Crime section of this advice for more details.

Dengue Fever is endemic to Latin America and the Caribbean and can occur throughout the year. In 2007 there has been a marked increase in the number of reported cases of dengue across the region. See the Health section of this advice for more details.

We strongly recommend that you obtain comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling. You should check any exclusions, and that your policy covers you for all the activities you want to undertake. See the General (Insurance) section of this advice and the Travel Insurance for more details.
