India Travel Warnings

This advice has been reviewed and reissued with an amendment to Summary and Local Travel (reference to strikes deleted) section. The overall level of the advice has not changed.

We advise against all travel to or through rural areas of Jammu and Kashmir (other than Ladakh), and all but essential air travel to Srinagar. There is a high level of conflict and terrorist violence in Jammu and Kashmir (excluding Ladakh). Jammu City is somewhat safer but attacks still occur. See the Local Travel (Jammu & Kashmir) section of this advice for more details.

We advise against all travel in the immediate vicinity of the border with Pakistan other than travel across the international border at Wagah. See the Local Travel (Other Northern States) section of this advice for more details.

We advise against all but essential travel to Imphal (by air) and against all travel in the rest of Manipur and Tripura. Kidnapping, banditry and insurgency are rife throughout the north eastern region, particularly in Assam. See the Local Travel (East & North East India) section of this advice for more details.

There is a high threat of terrorism throughout India. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by British expatriates and foreign travellers. Since July 2006, there have been a number of terrorist attacks in major cities including Mumbai, New Delhi and Hyderabad. On 30 September 2007, at least six people were killed and over 30 were injured in bombings in the north-eastern state of Assam. Penalties for trafficking, dealing and using illegal drugs are severe.

Over 600,000 British tourists visit India every year (source: Department of Tourism, India). Most of these visits are trouble-free. The main type of incident for which British nationals required consular assistance in India in 2006 were for replacing lost and stolen passports; medical cases; and drugs offences.
