This advice has been reviewed and reissued with an amendment to the Sea Travel Section (sinking of a ferry on the Amazon River). The overall level of the advice has not changed.
There is a low threat from terrorism. But you should be aware of the global risk of indiscriminate terrorist attacks which could be in public areas, including those frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers.

Violence and threatened violence is a common occurrence in Rio de Janeiro. You should be particularly vigilant before and during the festive and Carnival periods, as there is often a seasonal upsurge in robberies against foreigners around this time.

Around 169,600 British nationals visited Brazil in 2006 (source: Brazilian Ministry of Tourism). Most visits are trouble-free. The main types of incidents for which British nationals required Consular assistance in Brazil in 2006 were for muggings and replacing lost and stolen passports. Levels of crime and violence are high, particularly in major cities. You should be vigilant, especially when going out after dark.

There is a recent and contained outbreak of Yellow Fever in Brazil. Please see the “Health” section of this advice for further information.

There are frequent violent clashes between the Police and drug gangs in the slum areas of Rio de Janeiro. You should avoid these areas, remain alert and aware of local conditions at all times. See the Crime section of this advice for more details.

Drug trafficking and use is widespread in Brazil, with severe penalties.

We strongly recommend that you obtain comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling. You should check any exclusion, and that your policy covers you for all the activities you want to undertake. See the General (Insurance) section of this advice and the Travel Insurance for more details.
