Mozambique
This advice has been reviewed and reissued with minor amendments to the Summary and Natural Disasters section (Tropical Storm Jokwe). The overall level of the advice has not changed. Since 25 February there have been demonstrations against rises in transport and food prices in several parts of Mozambique, especially Maputo and Chimoio. Some demonstrations have been violent and led to fatalities or injuries. Demonstrations may reoccur. You should avoid all crowds and gatherings and follow advice from local authorities. See the Local Travel section of this advice for more details. Most visits to Mozambique are trouble-free but you should be aware of the risks of violent crime, poor road safety standards and minimal health facilities. The main type of incidents for which British nationals required consular assistance in Mozambique in 2006 were for minor crimes and replacing lost and stolen passports. See the Crime, Road Travel and Health sections of this advice for more details. There is an underlying threat from terrorism. Attacks, although unlikely, could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers. The tropical cyclone season in Mozambique normally runs from November to April. Coastal areas of central and northern Mozambique can be at risk. On 7 March 2008 the Met Office stated that Tropical Storm Jokwe is expected to affect some coastal areas of Mozambique between Nacala and Quelimane on 8/9 March 2008. You should monitor local media see the Natural Disasters section of this advice and Hurricanes for more details. We strongly recommend that you obtain comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling. You should check any exclusions, and that your policy covers you for all the activities you want to undertake. See the General (Insurance) section of this advice and Travel Insurance for more details. Click here to view the article Kind regards,
