Martinique

Several thousand British nationals visit Martinique each year. Most visits to are trouble-free. The main type of incident for which British nationals required consular assistance in Martinique in 2007 was dealing with arrests or detentions, mainly for drugs offences.


A strong earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter Scale occurred off the north west coast of Martinique on 29 November. A small number of people were injured and some limited damage to the island's infrastructure occurred. You are advised to contact your travel agent or operator to obtain the latest information.



The hurricane season in Martinique normally runs from June to November. Occasional earth tremors also occur. See the Natural Disasters section of this advice and Hurricanes for more information.


There is a low threat from terrorism. But you should be aware of the global risk of indiscriminate terrorist attacks, which could be in public areas, including those frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers.
