Chile

This advice has been reviewed and reissued with amendments to the Summary and Natural Disasters section. The overall level of the advice has not changed.
Around 50,000 British tourists visit Chile every year (source: SERNATUR - Chilean National Tourist Authority). Most visits are trouble-free. The main type of incident for which British nationals required consular assistance in Chile in 2007 was for replacing lost and stolen passports (over 65 cases). Pickpocketing, other thefts and muggings are also common and have been on the increase since. See the Crime section of this travel advice for more details.

The Llaima volcano, in the Araucania region of southern Chile, erupted on 2 January 2008. If you are visiting the region you should follow developments in the media and follow any guidance given by the local authorities. See the Natural Disasters section of this advice for more details.

Minefields are located in regions XV Arica – Parinacota (formerly part of Region I), I Tarapaca, II Antofagasta in the north and XII Magallanes y Antartica in the south (please see map at Nuevo Mapa Político de Chile con sus 15 Regiones - Escolares.Net - Tareas, Trabajos y Apuntes Escolares). We recommend checking with the local authorities before travelling to the border areas of the regions.

There is a low threat from terrorism. But you should be aware of the global risk of indiscriminate terrorist attacks, which could be in public areas, including places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers.

We strongly recommend that you obtain comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling. You should check any exclusions, and that your policy covers you for all the activities you want to undertake. See the General (Insurance) section of this advice and Travel Insurance.
