Tanzania

This advice has been reviewed and reissued with an amendment to the Summary and Crime section (British national attacked and robbed in March) The overall level of the advice has not changed.
There is an underlying threat from terrorism. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers.

In March 2008 a British national was seriously attacked and robbed by an armed group at his private residence in Arusha. Armed robberies are increasing, both at remote sites and in urban centres, including Dar es Salaam and Arusha. See the Crime section of this advice for more details.

Due to the current situation in Kenya, some of the buses, which travel the Dar es Salaam - Arusha - Nairobi route, are not currently operating. If you intend to travel on this route you should check the latest position directly with the bus operator.

You should exercise particular caution if you intend to travel to the area bordering Burundi. See the Local Travel (Burundi border areas) section of this advice for more details.

Around 50,000 British tourists visit Tanzania every year (Source: Tanzanian Tourist Board). Most visits are trouble-free. The main incident for which British nationals required consular assistance in Tanzania in 2007 was for replacing lost or stolen passports. There were 47 cases of lost or stolen passports last year. You should keep your passport safe and secure at all times, and remember to carry a photocopy.

We strongly recommend that you obtain comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling. You should check any exclusions, and that your policy covers you for all the activities you want to undertake. See the General (Insurance) section of this advice and Travel Insurance for more details.
