This advice has been reviewed and reissued with amendments to the Political Situation section (large demonstrations throughout Hungary on 15 March 2008). The overall level of the advice has not changed.
There is an underlying threat from terrorism in Hungary. Attacks, although unlikely, could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers.


Around 400,000 British nationals visit Hungary each year (source: Hungarian Central Statistics Office). Most visits are trouble free. The main types of incident for which British nationals required consular assistance in Hungary in 2007 were: dealing with victims of petty crime, there were over 100 cases of replacing a lost or stolen passport; and hospitalisations or deaths (20 cases).
