Ukraine

This advice has been reviewed and reissued with an amendment to the Summary (demonstration on 23 March). The overall level of the advice has not changed.
The Ukrainian nationalist organisation will be conducting a demonstration/march on Sunday 23 March 2008, starting at 1800 at the “Polytechnic Institute” metro station in Kiev. The demonstration will be held to protest against providing better living conditions to foreign students. Travellers are strongly advised to avoid areas in and around the area of the Polytechnic Institute in Kiev. Travellers of Asian or Afro-Caribbean descent and individuals belonging to religious minorities should take extra care, but all travellers should exercise caution.
Around 61,000 British nationals (Source: Immigration department of the Ministry of Interior Affairs visited Ukraine in 2006. Most visits are trouble-free. The main type of incident for which British nationals required consular assistance in Ukraine in 2007 were: for replacing lost and stolen passports; and dealing with hospitalisations and deaths.
You should carry a photocopy of your passport with you at all times for ID purposes and keep the original in a safe place. You should beware of petty crime, especially in crowded areas and tourist spots or when using public transport.
There is a low threat from terrorism. But you should be aware of the global risk of indiscriminate terrorist attacks, which could be in public areas, including those frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers.
You do not require a visa for ordinary visits of up to 90 days. See the Entry Requirements section of this advice for more details.
We strongly recommend that you obtain comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling. You should check any exclusions, and that your policy covers you for all the activities you want to undertake. See the General (Insurance) section of this advice and the Travel Insurance for more details.
