Uganda

This advice has been reviewed and reissued with an amendment to the Health section. The overall level of the advice has not changed.
We advise against all travel to Karamoja region in north eastern Uganda (Kotido, Moroto, Nakapiripirit and Katakwi Districts) with the exception of trips to Kidepo Valley National Park, which should be taken by air. We also advise against travel by road outside of major towns at night except between Kampala and the airport at Entebbe. You should also seek local advice before embarking on any journey to Kidepo Valley National Park. See the Local Travel (North East Uganda) and National Park sections of this advice for more details.

We advise against all but essential travel to northern Uganda (Kitgum, Pader, Adjumani, Gulu, Apac and Lira districts) and to the region known as West Nile (Nebbi, Arua, Moyo and Yumbe districts in Uganda’s far north west). See the Local Travel (Northern Uganda and North West Uganda) sections of this advice for more details.

We advise that travel to the northern part of Murchison Falls National Park should be limited to the Delta area, west of the Paraa Safari Lodge. In November 2005, a British national was killed in this Park. All visits to the northern sector of the park should only be undertaken in the company of an armed game warden who has functional communications equipment. See the Local Travel (National Parks) section of this advice for more details.

You should avoid the border area on Lake Albert unless prior arrangements have been made with the Ugandan and DRC authorities. In the Southwest careful consideration must be given before travelling to the border areas of Kisoro and Kanugu Districts because of the risk of conflict in the neighbouring DRC spilling over the border. See the Local Travel (West Uganda and South West Uganda) sections of this advice for more details.

There is an underlying threat from terrorism. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers.

Around 15,000 British tourists visit Uganda every year (Source: Ugandan Immigration Department). Most visits are trouble-free. The main types of incidents for which British nationals required consular assistance in Uganda in 2007 were for: hospitalisations due to road traffic accidents (3 cases); and replacing lost or stolen passports (36 cases). See the Crime section of this advice for more details.

We strongly advise that you obtain comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling. You should check any exclusions, and that your policy covers you for the activities you want to undertake. See the General (Insurance) section of this advice and the Travel Insurance for more details.
