Tanzania FCO Trvael warning - 5.4.08
Tanzania
This advice has been reviewed and reissued with an amendment to the Summary and General sections (Consular and visa services have been affected by extensive flooding in the British High Commission). The overall level of the advice has not changed.
There is an underlying threat from terrorism. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers.
You should exercise particular caution if you intend to travel to the area bordering Burundi. See the Local Travel (Burundi border areas) section of this advice for more details.
Due to extensive flooding the Passport and Visa Section of the British High Commission will be closed on Thursday 27 and Friday 28 March. This has resulted in a temporary reduction of consular services. See the General (Flooding of Passport and Visa section) section of this advice and the British High Commission website for more details.
In March 2008 a British national was seriously attacked and robbed by an armed group at his private residence in Arusha. Armed robberies, while still rare, are increasing, both at remote sites and in urban centres, including Dar es Salaam and Arusha. See the Crime section of this advice for more details.
Around 50,000 British tourists visit Tanzania every year (Source: Tanzanian Tourist Board). Most visits are trouble-free. The main types of incident for which British nationals required consular assistance in Tanzania in 2007 were: replacing lost or stolen passports (47 cases); dealing with deaths and hospitalisations, mainly due to road traffic accidents (8 cases); and dealing with arrests or detentions (6 cases). You should keep your passport safe and secure at all times, and remember to carry a photocopy.
We strongly recommend that you obtain comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling. You should check any exclusions, and that your policy covers you for all the activities you want to undertake. See the General (Insurance) section of this advice and Travel Insurance for more details.
