We advise against all but essential travel to Lebanon. If against our advice you decide to travel to Lebanon you should ensure that you are content with your security arrangements and keep yourself up to date with developments, including regularly monitoring this travel advice. See the Political Situation section of this advice for more details.
We strongly advise you to avoid public demonstrations and large public gatherings as the situation can change quickly and dramatically. This is a particular risk due to the current political crisis surrounding the election of a new President. There remains a possibility of politically motivated violence, especially in downtown Beirut where security is high. You should be aware that this could affect your ability to move around safely and severely limit your options if you need to depart Lebanon at short notice. See the Political Situation section of this advice for more details. We advise against all travel to all Palestinian refugee camps, which remain in a state of tension. From 20 May until early September 2007 there was heavy fighting between the Lebanese Army and militants, which largely destroyed the Nahr al-Barid Palestinian refugee camp near Tripoli, Northern Lebanon. See the Political Situation section of this advice below for more details. We advise against all travel south of the Litani River. There remains a serious risk from unexploded bombs remaining from the 2006 conflict between Hizbollah and Israel and a risk violence near the Israel/Lebanon border (the Blue Line). You should heed local advice in areas that have not been declared safe from unexploded ordnance. There is a high threat from terrorism in Lebanon. Attacks could be indiscriminate and against civilian targets in public places including those places frequented by foreigners. Since May 2007 there have been a number of bomb attacks in and around Beirut, which have killed several people. The threat of further attacks across the country remains. See the Terrorism section of advice for more details. You should ensure that your travel documents are up to date and readily available. You should also carry identity papers with you at all times and be prepared to stop at check points and to show your papers. If you do choose to travel to Lebanon we strongly recommend that you register with the British Embassy. We also strongly recommend that you obtain comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling to Lebanon. You should check your travel insurance covers visits to Lebanon, and all the activities you want to undertake. See the General (Insurance) section of this advice and Travel Insurance. |
