Which civ insurance company will cover you for working as CP in the usual nice places we all have to go to do this job?

What do they cover? I'm assuming its very expensive!

Any recommendations?

CICA. Combined Insurance Company of America. I'm with them.

Not HUGE payont on death but they pay a good wedge for everything else, from a trip to casualty upwards. They have two options, injury/illness cover and loss of earnings cover; ie they will pay out a daily rate while you are at home, seeing physio etc too. Great for the self employed etc and no premium for high risk employment or sports. Just one price depending on the level of cover you want regardless of risk.

This is something Coversure (Reigate) can offer for companies but not individuals...highest risk rating Iraq/Afghan is £175 per week/per person inc Accident, Illness and Med-Evac costs.

Cheaper options are available if Repatriation cover is not needed....

Basically...it is VERY expensive and so where possible you should make sure that your firm provides this cover for you...in particular Med-Evac costs can be VERY Expensive if you do not have any insurance and you may find yourself unable to return back home....

Hi Rupert,

Does CICA cover working in Afghan/Iraq? and does the policy include Med-Evac/Repatriation Costs?

I know of another two insurers that cover Afghan & Iraq but both quite expensive abd only one gives the Med-Evac cover which should be a must for anyone working in hostile areas.

Capital Benefits are often upto £250k..how does this compare with your CICA Policy?

The main problem with the aforementioned insurance policies are that they are not available to individuals so CICA may be the 'next best thing' for self employed CP/PMCs.

Cheers, Mark

P.S. Does this site already have a 'Insurance Expert'?

Personal Accident & Illness Insurance can be very expensive...as much as £175 per operative/per week whilst working in hostile areas such as Afghanistan/Iraq....

Normally Personal Accident is bought on a Group basis by the employer, if you are self employed you have fewer insurers to approach and cover can be limited.

If working in hostile areas, I would recommend that you check to ensure the policy includes Med-Evac Cover as it is becoming a increasingly big problem for operatives stranded unable to return home due to cost and availability of specialist medical teams/air crew/flights.

Capital Benefits of £250,000 are commonly offered. As always, read the policy to ensure it is suitable i.e. no restriction on work, sports, countries and jurisdiction...also equally important is to understand the claims process.... how will you get home if you have been shot and need a medical team...what if the airline wont allow you to fly on their plane? What happens if you fall ill and are being billed by the hospital on a daily rate?

If any forum member wants me to offer advice on their policy, simply email me a pdf copy to peruse accordingly. As always, info treated in strictist confidence and response made by external email with any general salient points added to the forum....

Cheers, Mark

Here is some further information I have posted before....

Annual Personal Accident Cover for Self Employed CP / PMC in Iraq/Afghanistan is £1,786 per year (standard cover and min premium) and Single Trip is £200 (min) per month with a certain UK Insurer, additional covers available include extension for accidental death (explosion/bullet) but the policy does not cover death by natural causes such as heart attack etc. You will need Illness Cover not available with this particular scheme outside the UK.

The other point to note is that Medical Cover and Repatriation to the UK is not covered so you should ensure your employers will arrange and pay for this before you leave the UK.

For non-hostile countries the Personal Accident Insurance starts at £50 Min per month for CPO working anywhere in the world and this would include Medical Cover and Repatriation to the UK.

Cheers, Mark

Hi CM,

I know of four insurance markets for Personal Accident and Sickness... one has a min charge IRO £200 Single Trip (1 Month, low cover and ex Med-Evac) for Hostile Countries and another charges upto £175 per week/operative with high limits of cover and inc Med-Evac Cover.....

UK Only PA & Sickness is much cheaper.... normally sold on a group policy to a security firm rather than individuals.... let me know if you want further information/details....

I can also arrange Public/Employers (Workmens Compensation) cover as well as specialist risks such as Kidnap & Ransom...work in UK, Europe, Worldwide inc Hostile Countries such as Afghan/Iraq.... again please let me know if you have specific questions as I don't want to bombard you with everything at once.....

Cheers, Mark

Hi CM, Like all things you get what you pay for and you should always make sure you know and understand what it is you have bought...

Fore example, Personal Accident can/should include Sickness (Illness) cover and also Repatriation/Med-Evac....is this included by the CICA policy?

Hi CM,

There are about four insurers providing CP/PMCs Personal Accident Insurance...like everything in life...you get what you pay for...

Things to ask about is Illness Cover and Repatriation/Med-Evac Cover as well as countries excluded or which have restrictive cover/limits of indemnity.

Public/Employers Liability is also readily available for CP/PMCs as is Professional Risks and Kidnap & Ransom.

Please ask if you have any specific questions...

Cheers, Mark
