I'm not sure what you're after... is it something that looks a bit like a wolf or a hybrid?? I only ask as I am a Malamute owner (& later this year racer when she's large enough to pull a rig).
If your looking for something "Wolf like" as a guard dog forget sled breeds like Malamutes, Elkhounds, Samoyeds and Huskies. They're generally untrainable for anything but pulling, as for guard work... well one quick burst of "who's a good boy... have a sausage" and you can pinch what you like. So far as wild Wolves, there are currently none native to the UK allthough there are plans to re-introduce them to selected Scottish estates in a bid to control the deer population. Regular snippits in shooting times if your interested. |

Experimentation training Czech wolf dogs and several othe wolf/dog hybrids over the last 20 or so years in Eastern Europe has found that, in general, these dogs to be unstable, nervous and unsuitable for work. Survival instincts in these dogs are strong and this prevents the development of the right drives, ie "flight" overrides "fight".
They look nice, but............. |

Great family pets..........my old man keeps two 1st cross Canadian Timber Wolf/GSD. Lie in front of the fire, very affectionate with smaller pack members ie, children and walks on a leash.......no problem, that is until they get out unaccompanied. A dog is a domestic animal, a wolf is a tamed wild animal, but still wild when the notion takes them.

I too know a gentleman that has been breeding Timber Wolves for 30 years that I know of. They make great house pets; now as long as you are anti-social this is great. However if you like to entertain then the Wolves have to be put away for that time.
Also I have known other people to have wolves as well but never once have I heard of a family having just one Timber Wolf; either two bitches or one and one. |

Having lived in Canada myself I have had plenty contact with wolf and hybrids. For a short time I had a Wolf, I "rescued" it from a crazy old lady that lived in the mountains, she had it since a pup when the Native Indians she paid a bottle of whiskey to stole it from the Den in the wild. She only kept it tied to a tree on a chain and fed it raw meat, Long story short I found a wolf preserve society and gave it to them.
What MPCTC said is bang on, WIld animals in general avoid confrontation unless it is a territorial within the pack or they are cornered or if you are trying to take or come between them and their food source. The Hybrids I have came across have been very beautiful to look at and some even weighing in at 150 pounds, (they were Timber wolf mixed GSD) but very skitish and not having any behaviour qualities I would desire for an obedient pet, let alone a working dog. |
