Pirates attack Greek ship
Delvina Marshall Island-flagged Delvina was taken in the south Somali Basin early this morning, confirmed Commander John Harbour from anti-piracy taskforce EU NAVFOR. The task force had no aircraft or ships nearby, so "everything's from a third-party at the moment", Harbour said. A spokesman from the Marshall Islands Register told Fairplay today that the incident took place outside the designated "danger zone" and the register is working with the Greek owner and military intelligence organisations to monitor the situation closely. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the captain and crew," he added. The ship's Greek owner Meadway Shipping & Trading declined to comment when Fairplay phoned today but, according to EU NAVFOR, Delvina has a crew of 21, consisting of 7 Ukrainians and 14 Filipinos. The 53,629dwt vessel, which had been sailing to Zanzibar, has now turned around and is heading north, said Harbour, but another source told Fairplay that the ship has now stopped, about 300 miles southeast of Mombasa. |

Greek cargo ship seized off Tanzania en route to pirate heaven in Somalia
Today early morning assumed sea-shifta from Somalia seized a Greek cargo ship with its 7 Ukrainian and 14 Philippine crew 280 nautical miles east of the coast of Tanzania in East Africa, 300 miles south-east of the Kenyan harbour city of Mombasa and.250 nautical miles north-west of Madgascar in the Indian Ocean. Greek port police and the EU NAVFOR headquarters confirmed the sea-jacking. The Greek police spokesman said that they had no contact with the ship after the crew sent out an alert. The Marshall Islands flagged, 53,629 dwt bulk carrier MV DELVINA, loaded with wheat was heading for Mombasa, Kenya. Why it was said it had sailed from the Mediterranean and then was found south of its destination when it was captured is not clear. "The freighter was on its way to Zanzibar when it was diverted to Somalia," said a spokesman from the EU's Atalanta mission, but Zanzibar can not take ships of that size. "The vessel was sailing to Mombasa when it was seized about 250 miles northwest of Madagascar," Andrew Mwangura, the coordinator of Seafarers Assistance Program (SAP) stated. The maritime official said the Delvina was the third Greek vessel seized by the pirates this year. Yet unconfirmed reports say, the sea-shifta had captured a small cargo vessel three days ago off the Somali port of Mogadishu and sailed southwards to use it as mothership for piracy attacks. Observers assume that MV DELVINA was seized using that vessel and do not understand why the naval forces had not send out a specific warning. Military sources say the vessel is running a northerly course with direction Somalia. Open Source Information. Saward |
