Hi H,
Yes for normal cannulation we use the velcro type. The MAT and CAT are to stop catastrophic bleeding ie from a artery. |

Hey Kev
Thanks for that, couple of questions. Excuse my ignorance but new to this EMT stuff. 1. CAT & MAT, I can work out what the "T" means but what about the "C" & the "M" are they manufacturers names? 2. Who supplies them? Need to quiz my instructor about them 3. Kind of a related question, read about field dressings that have clotting agents in them for major bleeds, standard issue to US troops apparently, Have you heard of them? If so can you supply the product name. Appreciate your help Cheers KSI |

Welcome to the forum. Th "C" stands for Combat as in Combat application tourniquet. "M" stands for mechanical as in Mechanical application tourniquet. I supply them, along with other medical supply companies. The dressing you mean is the latest version of the current US military issue first field dressing, but with the quickclot ACS built in to the wound pad. Its still only available in the US as it is very new. I dont know how effective it would be as the quick clot is designed to be packed into the wound. If this in a field dressing then it would be at most wrapped tight over the wound. Wait out on that i will check with my suppliers and try and get some more info. Hope that covers everything. KTM |

If Im honest i prefer the MAT as it works on a ratchet system and maintains compression even if you let go of the thumbturn. The CAT uses the standard "spanish windlass" system and will unwind if you let it go before its clipped into the safety cradle.
Also heard from a guy about the windlass breaking in afghanistan due to the cold and guy almost bleeding out waiting for medevac. KTM |

Hi all thought this link would help video with tourniquet applications below is the sales blurb. SOF™ Tactical Tourniquet Tactical Medical Solutions™ is proud to offer the newest generation of the SOF™ Tactical Tourniquet. We have taken the original design and made it even more effective and compact. The windlass has been shortened and anodized. The buckle height has been reduced and the safety screw has been redesigned to lower the profile and allow for easier tightening. These changes have made the tourniquet much more compact than the previous model. We are also proud to announce that the new version of the SOF™ Tactical Tourniquet is the standard issue tourniquet to all US Army Special Operations Forces receiving the IFAK (Individual First Aid Kit). It is also included in the tactical medical deployment sets issued to the most skilled Special Operations medics in the world |
