Hi tintin2k8,
I don't know if you've seen this thread How to become a Paramedic but may give you some more info about the Paramedic route after the army. Hope that helps, Regards, Paul. |

Hi JMC, Welcome to CP World, I'll try and help out here. I'm unfamiliar with the Paramedic world back in the mid nineties as I was still banging spanners for HM Forces, so did you appear on any register? The only registering body I can find prior to the Health Professions Council (HPC) is The Council for Professions Supplementary to Medicine (CPSM). The CPSM was replaced by the Health Professions Council on 1 April 2002. Assuming you did appear on the CPSM register, you can apply for readmission, onto the HPC register, allowing you to practice as and use the title "Paramedic". Details here: HPC - Health Professions Council - Readmission With regards to refresher training, here is some guidance from the HPC: HPC - Health Professions Council - Returners to practice If getting registered as a Paramedic again is the aim, It's probably worth dropping the HPC an email, outlining your specific set of circumstances. They are the guys that will have the final say so it makes sense to seek their guidance. Another thing to consider is that all Paramedics, on the HPC register, are required to keep a portfolio of work and training which demonstrates Continuing Professional Development (CPD). More info here: HPC - Health Professions Council - Continuing professional development it doesn't appear that they have a definitive, prescribed course to qualify you for readmission/registration. I think that's a good thing as that leaves you free to look around for training provision. If you want hands on training, with high volume high quality clinical exposure, I would recommend you have a look at Ronin SA: Ronin Protective and Paramedical Services In my opinion if you choose to do a course with Ronin SA you will not be short changed mate. Having met Timm Smith, Ronin SA CEO, on a couple of occasions I have nothing but good things to say about both Timm and his company, and indeed I can hand on heart say I have heard nothing but positive comments. I hope that this helps you in some way buddy, and that I haven't just taught you to suck eggs! Regards, Paul. |

Paul,
You clearly went to considerable effort responding to my email………..thank you! Most appreciated. I worked as a Paramedic for Northumbria Ambulance Service NHST, when it was NHSTD that was the accredited training division of the NHS (now its IHCD) I then moved abroad to work in the middle east as a Health Advisor and was still attending to the odd emergency as part of my role! ...........however, just before I left the uk they started the UK State Registered Paramedic rule, but I was in Syria at the time and didn’t need it…… Since then when I have performed any invasive skills, intubation, defib, IV line etc I have logged them in my Paramedic Log book that was issued by the IHCD when I originally qualified and everything logged has been signed off by a doctor! I don’t want to be a medic again, I’ve done that part and went to a lot of time, money and effort to qualify in all HSSE (Health, Saftey, Security and Enviroment) fields and will soon gain my sia licence to formalise my years of freelance CP work. To get to the point, I don’t want to work in the UK, I enjoy living and working abroad very much and have done on and off since 96, but I do want to be able to demonstrate to my clients that I have obtained and posses good quality qualifications/licences(valid) in CP, Surveillance and medical skills. The problem I have is trying to find a simple registration guideline on the medical front that will basically say………..ok, you have completed a UK IHCD paramedic course and you completed refreshers up to 2001, you have also completed ATLS, BLS and you have kept a record of all invasive skills practised to date…………..you are now a member of……. The Mickey Mouse Paramedic Club,,,,lol The problem is, for example here in Oman it doesn’t matter what qualifications you have or how old they are……….to practice in Oman you must simply sit an written exam and interview with the Ministry of Health and hey presto you are free to practice in Oman, and as for places like Syria and Yemen……………..nobody gives a shit and my BHSc and Paramedic Certificate was always enough! Am I making any sense…..lol I just want something on my CV that can give my client a little reassurance without completing a 60 day course in the UK….! Paul, thanks again, I’ve probably waffled on a load of nonsense but good to think out loud Cheers Jimmy |

I agree with everything you say guys regards, whats a medic and what is not. I have met a few 2 "weekers",some not so bad some downright dangerous, done the course and they think they are dr kildare !!!
I have heard mixed reports about the s.a. Ronin course, mostly the cost. Look at ex-meds mira course, also, crown medical training and prometheus. I am mira qualified, and a med tech,i work as a senior healthcare asst for the nhs in a&e,but looking for a contract jobs, anybody got any good leads would be grateful to hear about them. |

With the private IHCD courses you have to go and find 1500hrs hospital/999 placement to complete your qualification.
JMC3917 I ll be asking around. In the past I did hear that some companies hired IHCD trainers to do a crash course. You never know, you may get lucky. I'll be in touch. |

Working part time as a EMT. What more do i need to become a good medic in high risk areas as Irak, Afghanistan? |
