Hey guys,
I'm currently a cpo looking to move towards more of a medic role, I've got a couple of quick questions for you guys hoping to put me on the right track. 1. What formal qualifications will find you employment as a remote medic, psd medic or any advanced medic role within a pmc or medic qualified cpo? 2. I'm looking at Ronin's paramedic course in South Africa that will see me NHS approved IHCD Ambulance technician qual'd but still with 1500 hrs of prac to do, will this help if applying to a pmc? 3. Is there much work out there for Ambulance Tech's? 4. Can I look at doing the 1500hrs on a partime bases to get through to Paramedic training? Thanks for your help and this site has been a great find. Liam |

Hi Liam
I currently work as a medic and trainer in Kurdistan. Regarding qualifications it tends to differ from contract to contract. I am a Registered Nurse and also HSE Approved Offshore Medic. Basically the standard tends to be some form of 'Registered' Qualification. ie Paramedic, Offshore Medic, etc.... The contract I am on requires this as we have to purchase certain items from the UK....i.e morphine, etc... and they will not release the stuff unless all the boxes are ticked. The IHCD qual is a cracking way to start and work your way up. In my opinion it will be money well spent and give you good experience in a variety of situation. |

Hello mate,
I'm also out in Kurdistan (small world Disco3!) but yeah ditto Disco3 comments, I'm a registered UK Paramedic, another guy on my team who is the stand up medic did a 2 week 'EMT' course 2 years ago, so standards vary drastically. The ronin course looks good, but same with anything matey; in my opinion you need to be working as a medic in different environments doing the job to keep up to speed clinically and maintain a high skill level. Once you've achieved the Technician part try and get on a 'bank' contract with an NHS Ambulance service and then between jobs you can keep practicing. |

This 'EMT' qualification that certain companies dish out....... Well without getting too in depth and political I thing guys wishing to go into the medic field need to do their homework and research. How anyone can call themselves an EMT after a crash 2 week course with no actual 'live' hands on experience really does baffle me! I came across one of these guys a few months back. "Yep... I am an EMT..did so and so course". Well when it came to doing a bit of training and I asked him to run me a drip through he looked at me like I had just asked him to perform a triple heart bypass!! Apparently when he did the course he only practiced it once!!
Do your research fellas. Like most things you have to work your way up for the bottom. We've all been there at sometime! Saying that everyone who I know who has done the Ronin course as nothing but praise for it. |

Cushy in Kurdistan.....you have got to be joking! The other night I ordered a Chinese takeway from downtown Sully and they sent me boiled rice instead of egg fried rice! Also the other day we tried to go 10 pin bowling and could not get a lane for love nor money!!
