Afternoon,
I am looking for idea's on how to further my Med skills, I have done 1st AId, advanced 1st aid, and team medic previously. Any idea's? I know htis has previously been a rough subject, the Paramedic route is too long, looking for a similar qualification but shorter period of time that would get me a med job in a hostile environment?? Cheers Jedi13 |

Hi Jedi 13,
If you want to avoid doing the full paramedic route, there are a few other options. You can do an intensive EMT group of courses in the USA but I know these are rather $$$. The training is very intensive and you'll get a placement in an A&E ward and also an ambulance for a month or so each. The other route is to do a Remote/ Offshore medic course which is pretty comprehensive. It is a good one to have in case times become quiet and you want to ship off somewhere. If money is a bit tight, then do courses as and when you can without forking out thousands. Some training providers may offer a discount if you keep going back but not all will offer the complete range of courses. PHTLS/ ITLS - pre hospital trauma life support/ immediate trauma life support ACLS - advanced cardiac life support ABLS - advanced burns life support AMLS - advanced medical life support PALS - paediatric advanced life support I presume that you'll already have TCCC & BATLS???? My advice is to get the military PHTLS book and know it off by heart. Check out the PHTLS podcasts as well, they make learning a bit easier. Above all, just keep reading and keep the practical skills up. Pop into the medic forum and see what goes on in there. Sometimes some useful tit bits of info. |

Unless you have some contacts in A&E you are unlikely to get in there. The NHS and a number of other bodies don't like army medics - don't ask, it'll take too long. Even if they say yes you have to deal with all the CRB stuff, which is a joy in itself.
I must admit I only know one guy who did the USA route and he is away for a while. He had years and qualifications under his belt but to be NREMT makes an extra difference from rest in the field. All you can do is log onto Google and start the long search. But I say again it is not cheap! We are talking lots of thousands. The only other thing to think about is once you pass you have to spend £££ on getting all the gear! There are ways of getting around the price but in general you be forking out well over £700. Copy and Paste this into the Medic Forum and I'm sure some of the other medics will be able to help. |

If you are looking for a good wilderness medicine course i can recommend Solo in USA
Solo is one of 2 biggest wilderness course providers in the states along with WMA I took the solo course in 1996 and the WMA course last year. I liked the solo course better from my opinion they go deeper and have better training methods Those courses will get you a good Base for the American ACLS and PALS courses and The EMT courses are very well known world wide. Both those courses will give you NREMT Basic diplomas plus the wilderness part It will take you about 1 month but as sad before it is not the Cheapest way I remember seeing a company that did teach the American Wilderness EMT course in UK or Ireland some years ago Maybe google can help? (I thing solo still is the biggest provider of wilderness medicine courses for the American Armed forces) if you have some ?? feel free to PM me hasta pronto Smugi Last edited by smugalov; 05-06-2008 at 09:01 PM. |

WEMSI (Wilderness Emergency Medical Institue) run the W-EMT and the W-FR courses in the UK and Ireland. I have been looking at their courses, people that I know that have done them in the past have rated the course - but from the website and the lack of information I am not sure how upto date the courses are. Then again the European section seems to be better in web design than the US counterparts.
They run their courses at the Scottish Mountaineering centre at Glenmore Lodge, Aviemore. Wilderness Emergency Medical Services Institute WEMSI Europe Glenmore Lodge - Outdoor Activity Centre for UK Adventure Holidays in Scotland I have just posted a thread in the training section about a course I have come across and am seriously considering it.
