However i came across Paul's thread first which i found very useful, he was just the type of person i was looking for. People pay a lot of money to be on top of search engines and work really hard to optimize their forums and websites to become indexed in search engines. Likewise this forum is open with its threads being indexed in all types of search engines, brining many people like myself at first point of contact. This forum was one of the first i had come across which had the most relevant content and people on board. I thought this forum would be able to better assist me with the type of questions i had in mind as i browsed through the many threads before committing myself to join. Also the front page of their website it says: *PLEASE NOTE NEW ACCOUNTS WILL NOT BE ACTIVATED FROM 19TH SEPTEMBER 2008 UNTIL AFTER THE 30TH SEPTEMBER 2008. I think we are going off topic also. Hi Kayz,
I have just got on to that paramedic course with the LAS. There are 18 people on my course, all with different back grounds! firemen, teachers, school leavers etc.... Many with little or no medical experience. A basic first aid qualification will do, if you've got the right attributes. Look at the website for CRITICAL, thats what they are looking for. Sensible people who will be committed to completing the course. Be honest about your experiences paying particular attention to areas regarding education or the ability to learn. Learn the stuff about mircobiology and highway code, also brush up on map reading skills and your mental arithmetic. |

Thanks to all those who have helped! I have passed the first stage which was the application. I am going to go in for the assessment!

Thats right i need to look into Microbiology! Any good sites you could recommend to me and the specific areas that i need to cover? I will be required to carry a 45kg mannequin with a partner which is to last two hours roughly. Does anybody know whatelse i could be doing as they only mention carrying the mannequin - i doubt id be doing that for two hours. Any pointers for the second stage would be much appreciated. Cheers and thanks to all! |

they should have sent you a piece of literature on microbiology from the infection control handbook. Give it a good read through and learn all the key pointers!
my assessment went as follows; comprehension paper (cant remember how many on this one) arithmetic paper (30 question in 7 minutes) its multiple choice and get progressively harder 10 highway code questions 10 map reading questions 10 microbiology questions Then 45kg manikin up ten steps and back down. (listen to the instructors carefully. communication is paramount during the lifting. You can rest half way if you need to, but the main thing they are looking for is safety, technique and comms! After that, they break for lunch and form filling in. CRBs and the like (considering you passed) and then they'll issue you a interview slot. The interview consists of ten questions. Mainly about what you would do in various situations and where in your life you have shown CRITICAL values (check the website) this may be cheating a bit, but if they ask you the question about the mosque, say you'd keep your boots on, no matter what!!! (safety and all that) hope it all goes well. Anything else you need to know just ask. I just had to go through it all!!! start clinical on monday! |
