Hi guys - just starting out in the big world of trauma medic. Kevthemed pointed this forum out. I will be going on his remote trauma medic course in the beginning of Nov which goes on top of my army courses in team medic ELS and battlefield first aid.
Quick background I was in the army for 10 years in the Signals the Met for 6 in counter terrorism specialising in electronic Surveillance and specialist comms and now a private investigator but want to go into the med side of things. My aim in the future is to try and get on the offshore side of life is there anybody out there that can help me with what quals and how to get about getting on the rigs as I being ex signals I wasn't a CMT or an RGN or what sort of jobs I can go for with the remote medic qual with the background I have already have and what courses I should go for so employers will be interested. Cheers |

Hi Buckers,
Be careful! Choose your course wisely, I won't recommend a course for you but be aware of the following; Do a UK Remote Medic course endorsed/ approved, a foreign course may leave you unable to work in certain areas. As an example, a Danish Remote Medic course will not allow you to work in UK waters unless you are working for a Danish company. The best are the UK/ Netherlands courses. Also, if you want to be attractive you should have a look at the following certs: ABLS - Advanced Burn Life Support AMLS - Advanced Medical Life Support ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support ILS - Immediate Life Support (Defib) PHTLS - Pre Hospital Life Support or ITLS - Immediate Trauma Life Support ATLS - Advanced Trauma Life Support (next level from those listed here) Ultimately though you should look at a Paramedic course. There are ways of getting around doing a full 2 years degree. You could go to the USA and get EMT-P certification within 3 months but the price is rather large. There are companies in the UK who do it but I don't have an idea of price. Don't limit yourself to Off shore as there a number of other nice jobs you can do for similar pay; expedition medic & film/ location medic etc. Take a look around the medic section of the site and you will find some useful website links re medical bodies and other helpful sites. All the best. |

Some combat medic certs are just the cert itself, some are approved by a medical faculty. There are some Remote Medic courses that include a lot of ther certs listed above within the course. Hang in there, do your background work and then you'll be able to kick off.

Hi Buckers,
Welcome to the site and enjoy it, hope that you find the site useful and informative. There's the CPW Forum function on the 8th of November, at the Union Jack Club in London. If you can it could be a chance for you to meet like minded people and have a chat. All the best. |

Welcome to the fold.
I have an interest in Meds but would never profess to be a "medic" per se; take a look at ExMed in Hereford, they offer some very good offshore and remote are courses that are recognised by the Royal College of Surgeons, as well as doing a lot of med work world wide so there may be an avenue for a contact work wise there also. The Ronin South Africa meds course might be worth a look also; they train up to Ambulance Tech level and are in partnership with South West (I think) Ambulance Trust so their course recognised by the NHS trusts and can lead to a paramedic qual. I think (check their website) it also includes Ships Captain cert and others. Exmed - Global leaders of medical equipment supply, medical support and training. Ronin Protective and Paramedical Services Good luck. |

Although from a biaised view I can definately recommend Exmed. The founder of the company is a life long friend of mine and he knows his stuff. The guys that work with him are top notch and very well versed in the military field.

The Offshore ticket is a good one to have as it is handy to be able to pick up some ad-hoc work in quiet times. Money is good and even better if you are employed full time. I recently did 8 days cover in the North Sea for a company. I was paid very well and have no complaints. However the regular medics were on £280pd and working a 2 on 3 off rota! The installation I was on had in excess of 300 people so I was fairly busy. All good stuff and helps to beat the age old problem of some medic positions...skill fade.
Ex-med are spot on. A lad I know recently did his 2 week offshore medic renewal with them and said it was one of the best courses he had ever been on. |

Buckers,do your homework first b4 you start shelling out, there are a lot of coys that say they give you this ,that and the other, but truthfully don't come up to scratch.exmed, prometheus are very good,i can recommend interdive in plymouth for specialist offshore medic courses, ask for john,he's the headshed down there, also crown medical training is a sound setup, justin is the boss down there, based in swansea.
