Hey Fellas. Hope all is good.
Got a quick question: I'm a Civi with no police/mil background however I have previous experience in Door Supervision, Event and Retail Security for the past 2 years. I have sia Close Protection Licence. Now, as expected, i'm finding it very difficult to obtain work (like everyone i guess lol) Now i'm planning to further my security studies in: Surveillance Krav Maga BG course in Israel (I study KM) Medical Aid Driving Firearms Obviously this will make my CV that bit more attractive. Realistically, and i mean be honest CPW, will this increase my likelyhood of finding work? The reason why i ask is because i've spent £2,000 already on the CP course and the other courses it's going to cost another £7,500. In all honesty i don't mind paying, if it increases my likelyhood of finding work from Very Unlikely to Highly Likely etc. Is it worth me joining the TA to get some Military Experience? Or will that be looked at as "Meh, he's only been in the TA"... Cheers for any advice. |

Like most things you have to put in to get something out, it isn't a cheap business to be in, training is a constant thing and should be to keep your skills up to date. Languages have been discussed frequently as being a possitive bonus, so look at that maybe. Surveillance is another area all together so that gives you a whole new option of work. Krav is really more of a personal thing but if you feel it helps you with work then go for it. I'd say any military experience can be a bonus. Many employers look on military training as proving you are willing to stick at something and thus makes you look like a good bet for staying the job out. TA is still military training at the end of the day, it can't hurt to do it even for your own personal gain
Good luck |

Is it worth me joining the TA to get some Military Experience? Or will that be looked at as "Meh, he's only been in the TA"...
The obvious answer here mate is this... Of course it is worth you joining the TA if for no other reason that it will enhance your experience and tactical thinking, it will demonstrate commitment, you'll learn, you'll make new buddies, you'll network, you'll get paid for it, you may have an opportunity to get some operational experience under your belt - [absolutely invaluable], you may become part of an expert team, you may even get tested, you will have access to as many Joint Service courses that you can fit into your diary, you will gain firearms experience etc etc etc etc etc etc ............... Now... Please note that I have not stated here that it'll make you an expert or that all of what you do will be transferable, but it wouldn't be a BAD move, I feel... Trust this helps... Dobos,
Hopefully there's no such thing as "Meh, he's only been in the TA"... these days. If you DO join, be prepared, you might find sand on your boots sooner than you expect LOL Best of luck Mate RD Last edited by RocketDodger; 07-02-2010 at 12:03 AM.. Reason: spelling |

Sure is worth doing if you have the time. My daughter joined Jan 09. She is now returning home in 3 weeks from Afghanistan after a 6 month tour. Just shows what can be done in such a short period of time.
Good Luck! |

and there's me thinking the TA was part time haha.
Been looking into 21 SAS. And before you ask, no i'm not a rambo wannabe! I wanna see how far i can push myself. I know it's pass rate is only 4% but that means there's still 4% out there that are good/fit enough. Maybe i'm one of them? |

Dobos
Looking at joining my local TA myself, have been reg Army for 7 years but been out for 8 years now. I am qualified cpo as well mate but looking at getting the brain thinking again and weapon training dont think thats a bad thing as you can only improve. Also mate you can gain valuable experience and knowledge on tours. Hope all goes well PJ |

For my pennies worth....
Join the TA, it's a great thing to do and you will get some very interesting times out of it and some very random quals too but.... Join for the right reasons. You might very well get deployed. You will have to spend time away from your family. You will get told what to do a lot. Someone much younger and spotier will be shouting at you! You will have to learn that the TA is the Army and as such you will be held accountable for your actions in ccordence with Military Law. It's not a boys club anymore......it's a job. It doesn't all happen over night, things take time. (Soldier4sale - that's an exceptional position your daughter is in - I hope she reurns safe and sound to you) You might get killed (God forbid but it's happened) It will play havoc with your weekends and time off. You will have to put in the extra effort. You have to do all the crap courses to get on the good ones. When you start moving up, the decisions you make can be life and death ones. If you do go for the TA, go for it and get stuck in but please, join for the right reasons. Cheers Walks |

Really appreciate the replies guys.
I didn't realise that TA would get deployed as much as Regs and i used to be like "No way am i going to a warzone!". However, i've already put in the effort in travelling to another country to study Close Protection and if going to a warzone to gain experience will help me develope a career in CP then i'm more than prepared to do it. And what kind of CP operative wouldn't want to go to a warzone? An unemployed one... lol. Before i was a bouncer i used to be like "No way am i going to fight with drunks on a nightly basis!"... then i ended up doing it. Looks like i'll be doing the same with the Army. |
