Fighting Fit........buy a copy from Amazon. Not a world shattering revelation on how to get fit but it is a good book that outlines some real training routines based on practical exercises instead of treadmil and gym work.
Split into sections for P Coy, RM, UKSF etc with plans specific to each type of selection course; some with more hill work, others with more swimming or speed work. Like I said, not revolutionary but a good referance for only a few quid. You could also do worse than joining One2One in town (Oswestry); Rob is ex-Para and knows his stuff. |

Fitness always helps but if you want it you will get it! Its all in the head... people fail these courses because there mind fails before there body.. thats a fact! I have been an instructor at depot para/P Coy and have seen many athletic blokes fail and other blokes not so fit pass and go on to pass other hard core selections ... so in short as long as you are reasonably fit they will get you fit and dont Jack!

Know I'm not about to do the whole joining up thing or undertake a physical course, but have read a few threads lately where people ask what is the 'minimum' fitness level expected.
Now I'm no expert on these matters but surely if you are about to do this kind of work, especially in a hostile environment where it can bee exceedingly hot, and exceedingly cold in the winter too, where it is a physical environment, it seems a little crazy to be asking about 'minimums' at all. It's an extreme way of life, in extreme surroundings, shouldn't it be up to individuals to ensure that they are always fit enough, and that they stay in shape to the very best of their ability. I understand that some companies require you to do physical tests to prove your worth for their company, but i know i'd rather employ the man who shows me how much he wants the job and how he looks after himself, than the man who has shifted a few pounds for the task and spent a week or so going to his local gym prior, just to make minimum fitness to pass. I know who i'd rather have watching my ass, and it isn't the one who thinks that 'minimum' is sufficient. Just my thought on the matter for what they're worth. |

A lot of the physical training stuff is about self dicapline. If you can maintain that good level of fitness it will show in your work. As ExRegAndy said it's all in the head, your fitness helps no end. If you can deal with the physical side of things with some ease, you have more effort and energy to spend on the mental side of things 9times out of 10 that's where it counts.

Think of your fitness regime as a bank, the more you put in, the more credit you will have when you most need it! |

Very simple but obvious advise; I've never thought of it in quite those terms I have to say. Holed-up with Man-flu at the moment on my days off, so no physed for me... ![]() Carl, did the book turn up? Quality training to get you "army fit" coupled with the right mental outlook as mentioned will get you there. |
