wullie...I part owned a successful tattoo studio for over 11 years...I have seen a real shift from your average naavi and chavi coming in for tattoos to a more discerning, professional client who takes pride and time in thinking through the possibility of getting tattooed. That includes police, lawyers , teachers , judges , HM Forces, accountants , etc etc ....I believe that a real change has taken place in the general public's perception and views about those with tattoos. Partly because many famous celebs have them and partly because of the introduction of the Human Rights Act (1998), Article 10 , Freedom of Expression. Basically this could , maybe , if challenged correctly and strategically by someone be an infringement on one's Human Rights if they were discriminated against because they are tattooed. Note that the police in the occasion you mention did not say it was because the applicant was tattooed but because he had the word 'England' tattooed and this may cause offense. I am in no doubt whatsoever that it is only a matter of time before tattoos on individuals become so mainstream they will be visible on the likes of news readers, day time tv presenters etc.

As for the police, my opinion is the police force as a whole should represent the public, they are a micro society of the general British public and therefore tattoos should be accepted as long as they are not obviously racist or abusive.

I was so incensed by the police to reject the applicant because he had 'England' tattooed on his arm that I may seriously use a pseudo name such as Abdul Mahoo Ahem and write to the force concerned stating I have the word 'Pakistan' tattooed on my arm , will this bar my application? I guarantee it will enhance it and the silly Guardian Reading Police of today will rush my application through!! What a sad pathetic country this has become under this corrupt , criminal , abusive Labour Party!!

it all depends on what you have as a tattoo and where it is
our new force policy will be that there will be no visable tattoos on your body. so their tightening up on it at the moment

For all professional services I would say its ok, if its not shown wearing a job suit.
If its under your shirt / clothes I say no problem.
But having a police man with a tatoo on his neck or a security guard with tatoos on his hands would be impossible atleast in Scandinavia.
Whats not shown its not bother anyone..

When we trained Close Protection operatives its a demand from us that no tatoos are shown while wearing a suit, since this is often the requirements from the client.
Its not right to train a person that dont have the possibillity to get work.
Hm unless its a hard rock group ofcourse who is the client Lol*

The decision about tattoos will be with individual Chief Constables, as pointed out ,if the Tattoo is visible then, ask yourself, is it or could it offend anyone. Tats on the hands ,neck of face then forget it,you`ve no chance.I`ve done 16 yrs in the police and have numerous tats on my body, that can be visible under my shirt,ie due to materials, i am CID and no one bats an eyelid. As said be open and honest, if asked about tats supply photos, I think an England Tat on the arm would these days be acceptable in most forces.

Regal Security Training Ltd will become famous soon enough
Cant see the problem really, just the country has gone PC mad!!!! people have been adorning there bodies with tattoos for centuries, if for some reason and individual does not like a tattoo "Dont Look at it" i find it offensive when None nationals protest and burn our flag as there "Rights" to protest about the country that is paying for them to stay here! and there right of speech, that the majority of us Military and ex alike, have stepped in harms way to give them that right!!!! burn our colours!!!!!!!!

Im not bitter at all, i just think England is a Joke at the moment,

So in answer to the question the police have more than likely lost a good candidate because no one WANTS TO OFFEND OUR "FRIENDS"

Wulie,
If a kid goes to school with a grade 0 haircut, does it stop him learning any different? If you have tattoos matey dont panic. Although they get funny if you have "patriotic" tattoos,ie, flags. Anything else within reason is fine.....
I mean i had a chinese NCO who loved drawing on me!!!

Some of the cheif constables and recuirting departments are full of dickheads, some should have a tattoo denoting exactly that on their foreheads.
