Very sad news and a loss of a another colleague
No further news as yet but I'll try and keep you updated updatedhttp://news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30100-1318511,00.html http://video.news.sky.com/skynews/vi...500_090608.flv Policeman Shot Dead In Training Updated:16:53, Monday June 09, 2008 A policeman has died after being shot in the chest during a training exercise in Manchester. The officer was taken to North Manchester General Hospital, but medics could not save his life. Investigations under way at sceneThe incident happened at 11.35am in the Newton Heath area, an industrial part of the city home to several factories. The shooting happened at a huge disused warehouse, known locally as the Sharp Building. It was the former distribution centre for Sharp, the electronics giant, which used to sponsor Manchester United. Police sealed off entrances to the site but forensic officers in white boiler suits could be seen in the goods yard outside the warehouse, which was cordoned off with yellow tape. The head of Greater Manchester Police insisted that there was no danger to the public following the shooting. "There was no risk at any stage to any members of the public," said Acting Chief Constable Dave Whatton. "Nobody else was hurt when the accident happened. "There is now a full investigation taking place involving the coroner, Greater Manchester Police, the Independent Police Complaints Commission and the Health and Safety Executive. "Everyone in GMP is devastated by the loss of a highly regarded colleague and friend." He said the officer's family had been informed of the death but had asked for his name not to be revealed yet. Sky News home affairs correspondent Mark White said the location of the shooting was not, as far as he was aware, usually used for police training. Area where shooting took place"It's commonplace (for the police) to use live rounds, but only on the shooting range," he said. "It's very unusual for them to use live ammunition in other training scenarios. "If they were going through the tactics they would use to pull people out of cars, arrest people or gain entry into a house to confront people and disarm them, they would normally use blanks." Speaking in the Commons, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said: "The whole House will be saddened to learn of the tragic death today of a police officer during a training exercise with Greater Manchester Police. "This demonstrates the dangers that police officers face on our behalf. "I am sure that the whole House will join with me in expressing our deepest sympathy to the officer's family, friends and colleagues." Stand easy and R.I.P |

Training is dangerous and you can never reduce the risk totally, something very wrong has happened here involving live rounds.
Our thoughts are with all the families involved. |

UPDATE
Pc killed during training named Scene of Manchester shooting related videosThe name of the police officer shot dead during a training exercise in Manchester has been released. He was Ian James Terry, 32, from Burnley. Pc Terry joined Greater Manchester Police in 1997 and had worked as a firearms officer since 2002. He suffered a serious chest injury in the incident on Thorpe Road in Newton Heath at a huge disused warehouse, known locally as the Sharp Building. He was rushed to North Manchester General Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has confirmed it will investigate the shooting. It has revealed that the officer died after being struck by a single shot discharged from a shotgun carried by a colleague. Acting Chief Constable, Dave Whatton, said: 'This was a tragic incident and our thoughts are with Ian's family and friends. He was a well respected officer and will be sadly missed.' An IPCC spokesman said officers were training in a controlled environment practising tactics and using training versions of special munitions designed to stop vehicles containing armed criminals. The IPCC is still collecting evidence and hopes to issue further details in the coming days. A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police would not comment on whether officers used live or blank bullets, or both on the training exercises. However police sources said live rounds are used in some exercises. Home Secretary Jacqui Smith later paid tribute to the dead police officer in the House Of Commons. She said: 'The whole House will be saddened to learn of the tragic death today of a police officer during a training exercise with Greater Manchester Police. This demonstrates the dangers that police officers face on our behalf. 'I am sure that the whole House will join with me in expressing our deepest sympathy to the officer's family, friends and colleagues.' |

From what I have underdstand, an AFO has fired a rip/ferret round from a shotgun into a car during hard-stop training and the round unfortunately hit the PC.
It is so sad for such a young person to lose his life. RIP Nobby |
