Hi jcrymer,
I believe it is called a "hip-shank" holster, made for any type of handgun and yours looks like it was made for a left-handed firer. This type of holster comes under the concealment category, but you probably know all this anyway. As to which fraternity use this type of carry device I believe lays with the individual choice, role, clothing used, and is not to my knowledge a "general" issue item. Sorry to sound vague. I used to use one similar to this. But I was PSC on EP.

Yes it's a left hander, just wondering if it was an issue item for CO19 etc. It's offset from the body, I assume to use with body armour to allow a clean draw.

Off-set for the position of the hand as it reaches round the back to get a hold on the grip, not really about the armour vest. Holster placement is between centre of back and lateral hip. I am not the expert, hopefully he will show up and put me right!

It's their 'High Ride Shank Holster' used by ARV's etc. It's offset to be worn with body armour.

Actually, it is a standard level 1 (meaning only one retention device- the top snap) holster. The offset certainly can be an asset when used with body armor, but generally was designed to allow a jacket to be worn without covering the firearm. It is a very typical, simple holster which is best used when concealment is not an issue. However, it is not very secure from weapon snatch. Nice leather though.

It's actually designed to be worn with overt rather than covert body armour, the armour sits between the shank and the grip for easy draw, can be worn with or without a jacket and is considered a uniform duty holster. I have one exactly the same.

Its a peice of sh$t, don't get one, that my advice, after a bit of wear and tear its useless. They thankfully got rid of it when they switched to leg holsters, which was delayed for several years for very stupid reasons by very stupid people.

My opinion only

If that is your issue holster, you'd be wise to replace it with a level 2 or 3 security holster. That retention strap will barely keep the weapon from falling out when you move. Just for the record, the offset space between the weapon and the belt loops is a called jacket slot by most manufacturers. However tactical ballistic vests usually get hung up over the weapon when a high rise holster is used. Tactical vests usually work best with a thigh holster.
