Hi all,
I've read some of the previous threads from others on courses and I've also read various updates on licencing for PIs. I'm thinking about doing a course to update some bits and learn some new skills with the aim of doing PI / Surveillance work. From reading, I don't think licensing is a problem yet but I could be wrong. Anyhoo..... I read someones reply about making sure course is accredited, but I've seen one (API) BTEC Edexcel Level 3 Diploma and another (IPI) NCFE Level 4 Diploma. Does anybody know / had experience of either or know which is the better course as far as accreditation? Would a prospective primary contractor look more favourably at sub contractor with one over the other? I figured if I do one of these and to get back on the horse and then a more specific surveillance course like ISS I might get somewhere. Thanks in advance....any help appreciated, I'm bored senseless working civvy 40 hours per week. |

Hi G2Stu
Perhaps a good start would be to give Peter Jenkins the Director of ISS a call and ask his advice on the matter. Regards JHD |

Argus Europe does an excellent course in Surveillance BTEC Level 3 edexcel (advanced), based in the north east of England, worth a look

I would also recommend the Argus Europe course. Run by an operational company, Instructors have the right background, and experience and have great course delivery with lots of time for the students spent on the ground learning the skill sets.

The sia are considering getting involved with Private Investigations early next year apparently and licensing it. The SIA have informed me that it will probably be in force by next Spring. I did the API course which was ok but not an easy field to break into. Good Luck

G2Stu,
I did the BTEC Level 3 and found it informative, but some parts of it need to be taken in the context that the author is not an expert in alll fields. For example they seem happy to push that a lone Surveillance operator is the norm and is OK. I think, hope, everyone will agree that surveillance cannot be conducted by a lone operator. The course gives a good grounding in a lot of subjects, it won't make you an expert but it will give you the baseline to start from. I would like to think it will also be taken into consideration when PI licencing eventually comes in. Dave |

Dave,
You didn't do our course, I'm sure.. I'm quite shocked! Are you saying that a training provider who offers BTEC quals in Surveillance is actually saying that single handed surveillance is okay? Lone surveillance is the norm for amateurs. For those that do not have the knowledge and are unable to convince the importance of two plus operators to the client. We never carry out single handed work and we have been going successfully for 20 years with 2 and 3 man teams. Most of the guys I work with also work on this basis with their clients. If someone claims to be doing is doing single handed surveillance, he is probably claiming for two operators and only using one! Pete |
