Mate the HSE are very specific about the quals you need before being accepted on the course. Interdive will probaly take you on but you may have trouble getting a job when finished. Competion is quite stiff and being an Offshore medic is in the main all routine GP type stuff with very little trauma. In 3 years of ad-hoc work the only injury I have had to deal with is a dislocated shoulder. Most of it is sore throats and backs with the odd case of piles thrown in for good measure!

cheers mate good info,
i was also considering doing the course to increase my skill sets for expedition medicine as ive been in central america for the past year working as a medic for a Ngo and had some interesting medical and trauma cases to deal with whilst in the field, would a off shore medic qual be transferable to all remote enviroments or would i be better spending the cash on more specific (and cheaper) remote med/ HE course |

It all depends what you are after mate. The 4 week Offshore Medic course will have you doing 2 weeks of placements. A&E,ITU, etc...You will also do a GP's placement. If you have plenty of previous 'hands on' already a cheaper and shorter course may be the right move. The Offshore Medic qualification is a remote qualification. When I have had ill and injured people on the rigs in the past the only person they run to is the medic!!

The pre-requisite for off shore medics by HSE is that they must be Dr, Nurse or former RAF/Army/RAF medic (|CMT1 or equivilant). Even state registered paramedics can't do it allthough that may change in the future.
