Stand Easy!

I've seen a few ex-bootnecks on here through some posts, so as we have our own little area of the forum now, thought it may be an idea to introduce ourselves to each other. Who knows, behind the cloak of our user names we may even be old oppo's, but also a great opportunity to make new ones.

Joined up in 85, 295 troop. Spent most of my time going from and back to 40 CDO, (Charlie and Bravo) with a longish stint in Air Def in the late 80's and early 90's and finishing my time in 97 Yankee company in 45.

Left a day after the corps birthday in 97 and have been in the industry since. Initially in the UK and European circuits, but for the last 8 years based out of Thailand ( I know, it sucks!) working primarily Asia, but also Middle East and Africa.

So, be good to hear from a few more of you, not just the old hand but also some of the younger ones if they need pointers.

Steve.

Hey up Royal.

I joined in Feb 1980 , 144 troop. Posted to 42, stayed there until 84...went to Poole ...ended up getting a ships draft to Brazen for my sins. Return to 42 in 85. M Company for a while and then joined Recce troop, where I stayed until June 1990 when I decided to pull the plug. Went walkabout in Nepal to clear my head..unemployed for a while, did a commercial diving course but then got on the Fayed security team in London. Did that for just under 3 years. An opportunity came up to go to Algeria, so I took it. That was 13 years ago and I am still here. I head up the security team for a large Oil and Gas project in the South of the Country.

Thats it in a nutshell. I have gained some qualifications since then and have branched out to manage most aspects of the security industry.

If I can be of any help to anyone...drop me a line.

Good to hear from an ex bootie especially one from air def. I spent a couple of years in 40 cdo bravo coy 6tp in the late 90s then went into air def down in stonehouse plymouth. Did a HW 2s course and all arms instructors course at larkhill then left the marines in 2002. Been doing Surveillance ever since in the personal injury fraud sector. Drop me a line if you need any extra bods on a job Im looking for something new. Cheers.

Im after some heads up on pay etc from any of you guys with the experience of cp work also
would it be worth my while jacking in the fire brigade to seek work or would i be able to get some cp work in the uk Circuit on me days off from the brigade. many thanks winger

Hi Winger,
I think you are in the perfect position due to your work schedule with the fire brigade to test the water as it were with trying to find work on the Circuit. You are already earning so nothing ventured nothing gained. Throwing the job in at present I think would be a little drastic as it is very difficult to get a foot on the ladder (pardon the pun as you are a fireman!) on the circuit in today's climate. You would obviously have to complete a CP course of some description, and I would advise if you take the suggested path then you would definitely need one with the sia quals because of the requirement for UK work. I am not sure which course would suit you best as I'm on the other side of the world, more local based guys could give you better pointers.

I used to know a couple of ex booties who worked in the London Fire Brigade who took this path, and are now working full time in the Middle East after learning the ropes and networking whilst they were already employed by the LFB.

phew,
basically a right wet behind the ears sprog as far as u lot are concerned, joined in 04 done a few years at fpg(formally commachio) then finishing my time up with 42. not leaving because i dont enjoy it because i cant think of a better job, pissing up and and gettin the rounds down (not to mention 'getting massive'. but its just not enough money. i joined at 25 and im 28 now with a girlfriend who wants the 'obvious', but i just cant see a life with the pay that im on, apart from ops money lets face it id be better off deep frying chicken with spotty students and under cover taliban as my oppos.
just after advice from the sweats on here bout how far being an ex bootneck carries you in this industry and what courses are best value. already chatted to sum sound blokes on here who are really helpful and gen,for no other reason then just being polite and friendly. also bumped into a few knobbers(even ex booties) as well who seem desperate to dissuade me and effectivly tell me ive no hope (not in a constructive way), as though the only thought ive put into this is watchin a kevin costner film.
sorry for gobbing off but im outside in a year and 6 months of that i'll be away so its crunch time. thanks fellas appreciate any input. thanks again for all the helpful advice so far.
