This may seem a little problem but it just really annoys me.

Ive worked in retail for more than 5 years and from time to time you get the odd person coming in (normally the older people) and looking at the fruit and takeing a couple of g*censored**censored**censored**censored*s to eat and then they carry on walking round shopping.

This annoys me so much coz if ou get 20 people in a day doing this then thats how many bags been eatin

Theft is theft at the end of the day mate!

It's one of the those anoying things that just get to you even though it shouldn't, I think everyone has one. I can stand there and be called all the names under the sun with a hurl of abuse and dodge the odd bottle but as soon as someone calls me a 'jobsworth' it just irritates me and make me want to scream and do all the things that would have me loose my licence!

There is actually a term in the retail industry for this and its called "grazing". I had an interesting chat with the manager of Tescos in New Malden, an American originally and he explained that up to £10,000 of stock was consumed a month at that store alone and not particular to the UK but a world wide phenomenon. Not just the odd gr a p e but some helping themselves to pies and a drink or maybe the odd sandwich while they shop. Some know its sealing but some actually don't realise it is wrong and some intend to pay for the consumed goods at checkout but forget. One reason why the pick and mix section was removed because of more stock being grazed than bought at one point. Unsupervised children can often be responsible for such losses as they are not always aware that their actions are wrong and that is up to the parents to teach them.

The bottom line is grazing is factored into the cost of your goods at your supermarket. As you said people think its just one gr a p e but when 20,000 people have the same thought thats an awful lot of gr a p es!

Well bootneck80 that was some vitriol you posted, I take it someone has pissed in your weetabix!

I was merely pointing out a fact which does contribute to the high prices but also prices are affected by commodities traders which is the real reason why things like butter and cheese rising by over 65%. They are the real villains of the systems as they trade to gain regardless of social implications but that is capitalism for you.

As far as supermarkets earning record profits you also have to balance in long term investments and the jobs and infrastructure they bring which everyone benefits from one way or another. It would be true to say also without these large chain prices would be higher but maybe the quality would be better if not mass produced but how do you feed 65 million people in a country without mass production?

I can speak from experience by living in a country with a population of just over 4 million and still mass production in a primarily agriculturally based economy still exists. Compared to earnings, prices in the UK are still cheaper than here where the small population base can not absorb varying changes in commodities. For example diesel has risen here by 400% in six years which effects prices of all goods in shops as all transport here is by road or diesel rail networks.

I don't feel sorry for supermarkets and that wasn't the reason for the post, it was to highlight an activity that for some seems acceptable but it is one of the costs passed on to other consumers. Businesses are there to make a profit, that is the point of them and you would want that too if you ran a business.

Nothing is ever black and white, just varying shades of grey.
