Hi all.
Found your forums through the net, and thought you might be able to help with a few questions I have. I am 17, and am pretty much at the moment filling in a year and buffing up a bit preparing to (hopefully) get into the Royal Marines when I turn 18. As you can imagine with me wanting to join the Marines, most work (office work and the like) isn't really my thing. Soo basically I thought maybe there would be some possibilities in the security industry as a filler job for a year, and something that I'd hopefully enjoy at least slightly and hopefully learn a little from. Obviously if I were able to do anything in the industry I would need the sia license, and even then I don't know how likely it would be to find employment. So my questions really are as follow: - Can I get an SIA license at the age of 17? - If so would it take too long to be worth doing in a year? - If I were to get my license, how likely would I be to actually find work? - I don't really know a lot about it all, so what area of the industry (if any are even possible) would people suggest for me? - Lastly how much and how long are courses? Obviously this will vary, but a rough idea would be good. I think that's all. I live in Bournemouth area if this helps at all. Will very much appreciate any info, help or advice =) Also if it is not possible for me to get this kind of work for whatever reason, maybe someone would have some ideas of jobs that a 17yr old potential Royal Marine would enjoy doing for a year? Maybe... Anyway, thanks in advance, I hope my questions aren't too much =) |

You need to be over 18 to apply for an sia licence so unless you work for someone unlicenced think about something else to do for your year. Good luck in your future career!

Mate
I'd suggest doing as Ram suggested, get a part time job, enough to pay the bills but cocentrate mostly on your phys- don't over do it but train hard so you are ready for basic, being much fitter than the required standard will make basic a hell of a lot easier. Oh and as per the arrsepedia- Royal Marines - ARRSEpedia practice being sexually deviant while on the piss. Don't worry for all the Royals out there, in the modern age alternative lifestyles are all the rage. |

Sorry mate , sia is over 18s only... so not much work scope there.
As suggested spend the time at home as much as you can, get fit and concentrate on that for your year and if possible find yourself a job that will maybe stand you in some good sted after your mil career. I understand you don't like office tasks etc but it comes to us all at some point in life so a bit of an insight into it will do you no harm at all. Do a computers course if possible, if you don't fancy working... anything that will maybe help you in later life... Good Luck and enjoy your service mate. |

To apply for your licence you have to be 18 however you can do the sia training at 17 i suggest you do the Events ie glastonburry/Leeds n Reading/T4 on the beach as a steward you can do a NVQ Level 2 in event stewardin wich allows you to work at footy stadiums as well and wembley arena etc
try these companys Show and Event Security :: About Showsec :: The leading concert and event crowd management security company in the UK RockSteady Homepage Its pretty fun work hope this helps |

Look Son , Its been said already that the sia is a no go till your 18 so if you have a little bit off cash or decent parents, use the next year to get fit , go and Travel, see a bit off the World if not Europe cause that's when you will start to learn about life and various cultures when your parents (hopefully you still have them) let the collar off and I believe it will put you in good stead for a career as a Marine, good choice by the way even though they wear a Green Lid !!! lol !!! and all the best for the future, stay safe !

Mate
I'd suggest doing a part time job for a while and keep training, then travel for 2-3 months, anywhere away from the UK. Perhaps volunteer for a working holiday, that way you may get some costs back. Then come home and prepare for RM training. Enjoy yourself.. |
