Hello if your looking for information regarding security guard dog handling then check out these 2 web sites NASDU - National Association of Security Dog Users and The Institute represents trainers and dog handlers in the private sector normally you need an sia licence in order to work with a security company, there is no licence as of yet specifically for dog handling but NASDU is working toward doing so with the SIA. Requirements vary from company to company regarding qualifications to become employed with them as a dog handler, some companies have their own course that u must take and some will accept a certificate from a BIPDT or NASDU recognised trainer. You have to talk with the specific company you want to work with. The basic security dog handling courses will teach u the rules and regulations for the UK regarding the Law and how u can operate as a dog handler.
hope that helps
Cheers

Hay Cedrick

As mentioned you will need an sia guarding licence to work dogs in the UK, sadly you can in most cases expect to get paid the same as a security guard, sad true fact about the UK k9 industry.
However its not all bad there are some good companies out there but very few so be selective, NASDU are the main driving force behind getting the K9 security recognised as a specialist job so register with them and if you need training go via them.
Another good sorce is k9employment.com again like this foram set up and run by professionals in the game.
for an insite into the legal aspects search for the "Dangerious dog act" and Guard dog act" which is the UK law on using dogs.

My final advice would be to look at a high SIA licence ie. DS or CP as this will give you more employment opportunities

Good luck AD

We provide very good "safe" dogs at a reasonable price. There are more buyers wanting to look at a dog which is sociable and can be approached easily. The important thing is to find a trainer who gives you good scenario based training. NASDU promote a 50 guided learning hour course but be aware that a police dog course is 14 weeks.

Look for some tracking training which is not on the agenda for NASDU this will help with evidence and will put you up in the top 5% in the country. Believe me this is invaluable. I should know being an ex Met Dog Handler for many years to SO19 level.

You only need an sia frontline licence which is a joke and lobbying groups are trying to change this but the percentage of security in this field is so small it will not happen as it wont make money for the SIA.

A dog can set you back around £1200 and training is around £500. A good company will pay you about £9 per hour as a self employed dog handler. Shifts are normally long but you can easily clear £750 per week or £3k per month.

I am happy to help more send me a message.

Do not get ripped off by these dodgy companies charging a fortune for an aggressive dog. You do not need this. I know that there are companies selling dogs for £4k which are a heap of crap and are rescue dogs baited so they are totally nuts.

All the best

Alan
