Its a fair one Sutty but its a career at the end of the day. I came out the army in March having completed 8 years in the Green Jackets. I completed a CP course with Anubis Associates and did a couple of CP jobs. I decided to try out the old security guard thing and have been doing it since April.
If you show a bit of noggin about yourself and a willingness to learn then you will climb the ladder faster than expected. I am now looking at promotion to Security Manager after just 5 months and a job thats worth £30,000 or i could struggle to get CP work which is very thin on the ground. I know it can seem like a step down to your seasoned CPO but its career VS occaisional work and for those with responsibilites i think the career wins. All the best fella's cheers for posting. Paul |

I acknowlege the points.
I dont post many jobs here anymore because if the monies not great you are moaned at ,if certain people who think the industry owes them a living dont get the job they slag you off..... I think any job is a chance for someone. During Ramadan especiallly some money is better than no money. none of the above aimed at any one person but as an employer it can be adamned if you do and damned if you dont situation sometimes. |

Look at it from another perspective;
A). Hotel 4day on 4day off = 91days p.a. @19,000 p.a. = 214GBP p.d or 17.83GBP per hr per 12hr day B). Driver 5day week = 261days p.a. @24,000 p.a. = 92GBP p.d. or 11.50GBP per hr per 8hr day Correct me if I am wrong, but the Hotel job looks better for time and money than the driver job. Its like mortgages, most people look at the short term monthly payments instead of the long term over 25 year end result. The lads with ArmorGroup did this when they moved to CRG in Iraq back in 2003/4 thinking they would earn better. |

4 days on, 4 days off gives anyone the time to study in the off time and it's a hotel where i assume meals are covered during work hours (just an assumption).
I have worked assignments with a CPO for some of the world's largest corporations and wealthiest individuals. He was a guard at a 5* Hotel and his experience there taught him how to deal with VIP's, how to give them space, manage crisis and was the door opener to the really, really, really good job he has today. He is of course a qualified CPO but the hotel work helped him get into the top of the top as far as net worth clients go. It's not only about the money. m |

So long as the industry is self regulating and reliant on networking the chaff will always be shed. The issue is when the chaff says it will work for less and the greedy bastards only see the profit margin growing. Many firms who profess to be operational and indeed to be actively training are in fact not. Or they are canceling courses all the time because of a lack of students. A little point to note is the sia do not accredit anybody. Aside from the approved contractor scheme which is worthless anyway when so many companies have it. Training companies are accredited by the educational awarding bodies and for the most part they will accredit anyone with the lesson plans and a suitabily formed CV. Even thats not so bad as back in the days where a guy could just set up a CP course and run with no need for accreditation. |

Guy's unfortunately thats the reality of the job front, good on you soldier-glaze for doing something different and getting a new career.
Just o point that some people might want to consider (regarding driving a bread van, etc), in his position he will be able to get some good contacts, depending on the VIP's using the hotel, also cooperate with other goverment agencies. So maybe he as not done to bad, and the posibility of gaining a excellent netwok source. Also he gets regular income to pay the bills and little chance of getting screwed over. All the best on your new career soldier-glaze. |

Fellas my point isn't that its a crap job.Far from it.
One of my first jobs after the Army was at a 5 star hotel and it was a fantastic Building block in my career .The experience and knowledge gained are second to none .I still use them on my CV as a reference. I would recommend this type of work to anyone My point was that I was earning more in the 90's then what is on offer now. I feel it is mentioned to often about networking and contacts.yes these to things are very important and probably the only true way of getting on a job ,but this shouldn't be an excuse by the employer to pay less money. Paul good luck with the promotion.I'm glad you chose an excellent training provider and I'm sure that your training as well as your experience on the ground will stand you in good sted for the future. |

Guys , its been very interesting forum this, I believe the sia is one big con, i spoke to a top judge in heathrow from belguim the other day about this , and was told that if anyone was to take this to the european courts , the SIA would collapse as this is unfair on working rights , why should we have to pay to get a job .all ive heard on numerous times is that guys go to these SIA CP courses learn yes maybe, but you will never beat an experienced guy who was old school . they giving it away to these youngsters who think they know it all becasue they went on a cp course for a week or two and paid stupid amounts for it and the firms are laughing all they way to the bank while potential cp guys are struggling to get work here in the uk. just my oppinion , but feel its going to get very interesting , i dotn have a SIA peice of paper , its who you know these days and how reliable and experienced you are that gets you the job.
what are your thoughts ?. |
