Not my field in depth but:

Could you get away by recruiting local householders to allow hard-wired cameras to discrete recorders in their premises? Might only then need a north south east west position looking inward, but four recorders? Good daily liaison with the school and a couple of hours in the mixing room may reveal those persons entering after dark, all with common intent? People less likely to hood up/mask up on the highway, possibly higher lux outside the school too. Alternatively, cobble together your own infrared masks for ordinary playground lights, a lot of non-specialist equipment wanders well into the IR spectrum.

It's always hardest to catch people in the act, but their acts preparatory are often in plain view.

I like the idea, but the problem is this.

The school has trees surround it from the left, rear and front. The only open side to the school is the right. However, the only thing on that side is a small walkway with more trees on the other side of that again.

It's fairly covered within the small 'forrest'.

I've gotten them to invest in real equipment from Securitas. So now it's up to the school and Securitas (A local renta-security firm, believe you have it in the U.K. as well.) and I will be coming by from time to time to hear how things are going, and to see if I can do anything else.
