No, the other North! is on a distinguished road
'Kim', by Rudyard Kipling. Nothing over-stated but contains everything: brush contact, humint handling, observation, assasination, enlisting support, espionage.

'Seven Pillars of Wisdom' by T.E. Lawrence, for when the politics are beginning to fail and more direct action is needed. The man was a ruthless, single-minded hero of the old school, but not in the shoot-em-up style. Skip the bit about pretty camels though.

The Deceiver by Frederick Forsyth, tells the Story of Sam McCready who was a Sneaky Beaky with Six. The book is really four stories in one, which plays out as a review board hearing that examines four operations he headed up. Quite a good read, I had one in my daysack for 6 months and think I read it four times.
